Submitter: marcus
Summary: Ever since Tod drew an image of his character and Vincent at a tiki bar I have wanted to draw this.
Description: Tiki Bar Mice
Title: I did NOT get fat!
Submitter: marcus
Summary: You know how some women get a bit of a self-image problem during pregnancy? Well, considering how unbstable Rapta is I figured she would be one of them.

Description: Another attempt of drawing Isis in her anthropomorphic form.

Title: Happy Fathers Day 1
Submitter: marcus
Summary: Since today is "Father's Day" in the USA and we have seen so many "nice" images I thought a more villainous slant on the holiday was in order. Rapta, being a good daughter (Yeah! Right!), made her Dad a present.
Title: Happy Fathers Day 2

Summary: The second part of the "Father's Day Card". I guess Jenner got just "what he always wanted".

Title: Military Marriage (Ink)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Finally some time for art, not much, but enough to ink the sketch. I added both Jolina's and Tod's parents in the background. As for why Tod would still be wearing uniform, I figure in the mouse colony the soldiers would have an almost "family" kind of conduct, even towards veterans and those who no longer served. And as to whether they would allow two members to marry, the colony probably has too few members to be picky about that sort of thing.

Title: Who goes there?
Submitter: marcus
Description: Since Tod left the mouse colony guards just as Janus did. I am not sure at what time each of them did leave respectively but I can imagien they did know each other during the service, although Tod was a Sergeant and Janus was just a Corporal. This might actuallt take place after both left the guard ranks and Janus, in his new position, needed or wanted to talk to Tod and thought his old comrade in arms might be less suspicious of him if he wore his old guard outfit, unarmed of course.
Title: Corporal Janus
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just a concept of what Janus might have been like before he left the guards. While not very tall or strong I still think that he probably was more of a close-combat soldier rather than a sniper. Although his choice of weapons, daggers and one-shot pistols still hint at a rather stealthy yet hands-on approach. ... perfect for a potential sociopath IF that is what Janus truely is. Who can tell?
Title: Delirium
Submitter: marcus
Description: I was feeling so down and bored in class today that this concept "popped" into my head. I call her "Delirium", for obvious reason. She might be of the same clan as Malaria. I do not know. She is not evil, more like a "off-beat" medicine woman, a kind of "Phyllis Diller" with voodoo overtones. I just had a ball drawing her crazed expression and giving her the outragous tribal paints. I bet the clan children love it when "Auntie Delirium" tells stories. Some other names to describe her could be: She-who-brings-the-pink-elephants, or She-who-talks-to-rocks-and-complains-about-them-being-rude
Title: at AFW
Submitter: marcus
Description: An image of Brutus and three friends of his that attended this year's "Atlanta Furry Weekend". The subtilte could read: "Remind WHY we invited HIM along?" I had first wanted to make this image with Vincent since he is more my "alter ego", but Brutus just looked funnier holding a camera.

Title: The Guitar
Submitter: marcus
Description: This was a request of Mrs Brisby playing the guitar. I though, "Why not?"
Title: Doh!
Submitter: marcus
Description: Have you ever felt like the biggest moron, doofus, imbecile, idiot, numbnuts, ignoramus, dope, dupe, dunce, dolt, dimwit, dullard, dimweed, klutz, cretin, or maybe just not-as-smart-and-alert-as-you-thought-you-were? Well, today was one of those days when I felt like that again. After days and days of no time for art I FINALLY had some time for it... only to realize that I had left three sketches that I had wanted to ink at my agency desk and also that my folks took my digital camera with them, the one I use to take background images and nature shots. DOH!

Title: Aila
Submitter: marcus
Description: I am not really happy with hos this image came out, but I doubt I can get it closer to what it is supposed to be. Okay, before anybody asks, this is not a character I intend to play, it is not a charatcer owned by anyone else, and it is (probably) not based on any real life person. At least not anybody I have ever met before. Let me explain... Sometimes when I meditate I get images in my head. Most of the time I know they are vague or I know what part of my imagination created them. But at other times I get images that are so vivid and non-rational in terms of how they relate to my subconscious that I feel like I need to "capture" them somehow, so I will not forget them. A few weeks ago I saw the image of a woman, not crystal clear, but certain spects of her were sharp, like I was seeing a "concept" of a person rather than a person in an image. The woman was aboyt 30-35, had dark-tanned skin, hard but sad features, reminiscent of a Native American. She was also skinny, boney almost. I got the feeling that this woman was suffering from a disorder that did not allow her to acrue fatty tissue like normal people. Hecne, she looked rather androgynous. I also had the distinct impression that she could not hve any children due to this condition, which was one factor in her sadness. But I also saw an article of clothing on her that I first thought should not be there. The article is the bone pendant depicted here, called "Lei Niho Palaoa". I knew from my art studies what it was and I thought only men were allowed to wear it. Also, I got the feeling that this women was suffering from a burden of "expectation" placed on her by others, menaing that she was expected to act in certain ways, in a certain role. And her medical condition, in her opinion, actually prevented her from fullfilling these expectation. The last thing I got in the meditation was a name, "Aila", pronounced (Ah-eeh-lah). Since I could not really make out the features of this woman clearly I decied to try and convey the "impressions" I got into a mouse image. I haven't researched the name "Aila" yet, but the fact that the woman was wearing a "Lei Niho Palaoa" lets me to believe it may be Hawaiian. I will research that and the question wether women were also allowed to wear this ornament this weekend.

Title: matters of importance (part 2)
Submitter: marcus
Description: The second part to Janus taking notes on the Elder argument. After all, he is just a loyal servant of the Elder Counsel.
Title: matters of importance (part 1)
Submitter: marcus
Description: There is a log of a roleplay between two female Elders on the NIMH-MUCK website where both Elders are almost a each other's throats. I thought it would be funny if said Elders would then report the incident to Janus, each from their own perspective and with emphasis on their own concerns.
Title: Fishing is hard!

Title: "I can assure you that this is not personal."
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just something to describe Janus' personality a bit more. I doubt the guy ever expresses actual animosity against anybody, but will probably go to "any measn he deems necessary" to ensure the "best for the colony", whatever that may be. He is not usually one to use violecne himself. That is what agents and operatives are for. But when desperate times call for desperate measures I would not be surprised if he carries a small, one-shot needle gun underneath his robes. And you better believe that his aim is good, very good.
Title: Tzolkin muses (recolored)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Ooops! Tzolkin's owner reminded me that his vest was supposed to be dark blue. Thanks to coloring software that gets fixed quick (Chuckles!). Plus it seems his eyes seemed to look a bit more greyish than they used to so I gave them the same blue coloration as the darker vest.

Title: Janus
Submitter: marcus
Description: Janus is a rather young member of the mouse colony, most likely from the second generation. Like all young mice he spent a year working as a guard and actually extended his service for three more years, rising to the rank of Corporal. All that changed when bad information caused him and his squad to be ambushed and three of them getting killed in the process. Furious with the lack of good intelligence Janus resigned from service and petitioned that the Counsel of Elders would allow the creation of a department in the Colony with the sole purpose of gathering reliable intelligence. The Counsel agreed and Janus took a menial job in the new department, also recruiting a number of other disgruntled soldiers. A few more years and Janus was at the head of the agency, collecting, analyzing, and distributing vital information to the guards and the Counsel of Elders. He is always at the forefront to proclaim his dedication to protect the colony. But some voices question that dedication. Some believe Janus uses his position to exert a level of control over the Counsel of Elders and the colony that is unprecedented. Nobody, not even the Counsel knows who woks for Janus, only that mice from all ages and walks of life have been recruited by him to act as informants. Some are even rumored to work as independent agents, maybe even assassins. Since the identity of his operatives have been kept secret, according to Janus to safeguard their lives, many people are suspicious of the mild-mannered and charming "chief of intelligence". Janus can be seen walking around the colony or reading papers in his office. He is a rather unassuming mouse on the surface, but many claim that this is just a front for a rather cold and manipulative character. Who can tell who Janus really is?

Title: Bedtime Brutus
Submitter: marcus
Description: I didn't finish the Brutus and Ranger images but I had this image doodled up last night while waiting for one of my clients who was over 40 minutes late for a 7.00pm appointment. I was so tieed that I wondered what Brutus might look like when gets to go to bed.
Title: Armored Brutus (discarded armor concepts)
Submitter: marcus
Description: The first thing I decided on was that Brutus would have no capes or cloaks in this image, nothing that would even hit at style. So even the cape from his movie design went out the window right away. The next idea was to deprive him of any weapons, swords, axes, anything. If he was to be the incarnation of "blunt weapon" than he himself, just him in his armor, would have to be that blunt weapon. That's when I started playing around with concepts of really heavy armor that would turn Brutus into a slow, cumbersome, but awefully efficient "living hammer". Basically, I wanted to put armor on him that would make his very being into a weapon, a bludgeoning tool. These two attempts were scrapped right away. The left one was still too stylish and too reminiscent of "sharp edges", which I did not want Brutus to have. The one to the right got closer to the blunt aspect I wanted but the rigid lines still made him look to awkwardly graceful. Plus he looked like a modern machine and I wanted his feel to be more primitively blunt. The last concept, the one I finally stuck with, expressed that better. I should have that up and colored, together with a version of Ranger later tonight.
Title: Armored Brutus (body pose sketch)
Submitter: marcus
Description: I started working on a confrontation image between Ranger (in his final, most nightmarish form) and Brutus a few days ago and one big question was: How would Brutus have to be armored to be able to stand up against such a Hellishly equipped creature as Ranger in his final form? I looked at Ranger and his weapons and armor and decided that Brutus would definately need an upgrade in gear as well if he was to have any hope of surviving an encounter like that. The style direction to take was harder to decide on. I wanted a style that would be in direct opposition to Ranger's gear so that a battle between the two would be more than just a combat between two huge and powerful combatants that were armed to the teeth. I wanted it to be more of a confrontration of principles, of "life philosophies', so to speak. Ranger, with his razor-sharp armor parts, skull helmet, and his waving black cloak gives off an air of "Grim Reaper" mixed with "Phantom of the Opera" and a whole lot of razor blades and bludgeoning power. In short, Ranger was a stylish incarnation of cold, unavoidable, and most of all painful death. In a way, his design mixed terror with stylish beauty, the cold and morbid kind. Brutus, as his name suggests (Latin: brutus= blunt, uncought) would not have that amount of "style". His approach would be purely machinistic, no "flair" or even association with death. What I wanted for Brutus in this image was the incarnation of "blunt instrument", where Brutus himself becomes that blunt instrument. So I started out with a simple unclothed Brutus body sketch, hunched up, fists raised, ready to be "blunt" and started experimenting with armor concepts from there.

Title: Brutus (body study)
Submitter: marcus
Description: I always wondered what Brutus looked like underneath that tunic and cloak of his. Oddly enough, when I removed them from his general body shape and added a few "fuzzy tufts" Brutus' anatomy even somewhat resembles the proportions of a human suffering from acromegaly (pituitary giantism). I always thought Brutus' growth was not quite natural.
Title: Constantine (body study)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just for kicks, after I did the Remus image I thought I should do one of Constantine in a more lively stance without clothes as well.
Title: Remus (body study)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Remus and Constantine's owners had asked me some time ago to do model sheets of their characters. I did one for Constantine but was not happy with it. The artifical pose just made Constantine look so horribly "fake" to me that it didn't even feel like "Constantine" to me anymore. After seeing Ferisha's "paper doll" of April I wondered whether an un-clothed version of Remus and Constantine in some sort of pose would work as well. I'll let their owners decide on that issue, but I like them like this better than standing in a model sheet pose.
Title: a stroll on the beach (ink2)
Submitter: marcus
Description: This ink is proof one should never try to draw NIMH characters after listenting to the "Kokomo" song. I had to slim Brutus down a bit below the waist to make him fit the boxer shorts, but overall he is still the same shape as in the movies. Yes, that is April's hand he is holding. No, he didn't tear it off. I know SOMEBODY will make that comment if I do not clarify that right now (Chuckles!). Now I just have to clean the inks up, color them, and then cut and paste the characters together onto a beach background.
Title: Brutus' shorts
Submitter: marcus
Description: Okay, this is one of those evil teasers when I doodle something that makes me laugh. I wanted to draw an image of Brutus and April in beach clothing, taking a stroll on the beach. The problem was, how to fit Brutus big a** into any sort of tropical attire. After an hour of experimenting I finally managed to fit a pair of tropical boxer shorts on his shape. I was so proud that even though the image isn't done yet I had to scan the doodle of Brutus' boxer shorts. Here they are: size XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXL
Title: Finding Vincent (Part 2)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Ever since he had received the treatments, the treatments that had allowed him to think deeper than a normal mouse, Vincent had been plagued. Thoughts were good. He liked to muse, to ponder. Mysteries enticed him, knowledge fascinated him. What caused him pain were the emotions. For whatever reason the magnitude of his emotions appeared to have intensified. Their range was still the same, joy, anger, longing, grief, love, hate, loneliness, and all the others. But while the nature of these feelings had not changed their voracity had. Whereas grief for a loss had once been something he would feel and slowly outgrow it would now hit his heart like a lead weight, paralyzing him in an unbearable chokehold. Love would turn into a burning flame so hot it would consume him every time he let his heart get close to someone, so hot it burned his own sense of self away. Anger, fear, panic, longing, they all had grown so strong that they would flood his mind to the point where his thoughts could not handle them, breaking him down. He had never told the rats about this. He still could not explain what it was to himself. He had tries to push the emotions away when he felt them coming, but that had made matters worse. Once pushed aside they would break back in, break back into his mind with renewed force, sometimes even causing him physical pain without outside injury. He would feel mortal terror in the absence of any danger. No, he could not push these emotions away. They were too strong, threatening to drown out hat small part in his mind that was “Vincent”. Gabriel and Simon had given him herbal remedies to help calm his nerves, but even those only kept the storm of feelings at bay for a given time. Then he had learned to open himself up. Vincent had read many books while working in the library. A book on relaxation and meditation had sounded interesting. He had read it, read how one could relax one’s body, let go of one rational mind, and in the same way free oneself temporarily from the burdens of emotional pain. So Vincent had practiced to let go, let go of himself, his fears, loves, desires, not by shutting them out, but by allowing himself to experience them all while in a state of complete relaxation, without thought. This is how Isis found him. Now power, no force, no magic. She just felt emotion, all the different kinds imaginable, pouring out of the mouse’s mind and into the night. Isis shuddered. She knew about pain. She knew about pressure. To have these emotions bottled up inside a mind too small to hold them was a prospect she did not want to imagine. Yet there she was, feeling how one by one Vincent allowed himself to fully experience these raw feelings and then let them pour out of him. She could see his face contort in rage as she let all his anger manifest itself and gush from his mind, a wide grin at the horrendous humor swelling up from his heart and into the darkness of the Valley. But that was not the thing that caused her amazement. As the mouse allowed all of himself to flow out it appeared something else was flowing into him. From where it came Isis did not know. She could feel that Vincent did not know either, and did not even care. From somewhere, somehow a calm, serene kind of love, a boundless acceptance filled the small mouse up as all the raging emotions passed away. And even to Isis, to whom Vincent’s mind was an open book, this boundless tranquility that showered into Vincent from all around them felt… warm. That was it. The warmth of acceptance, unconditional acceptance of oneself, by oneself, by another, by the universe. That was what she had felt with Vincent. The mouse did not hold the secret within him. She had the secret within her own being. The wonderful simplicity of it all made Isis laugh. Just then, the mouse appeared to have dumped all of his emotional baggage for the night and opened his eyes, realizing for the first time that he had been watched. He blushed. “Evening Isis. I hope I wasn’t too out-of-step?”
Title: Finding Vincent (Part 1)
Submitter: marcus
Description: The night was cold, but not in the usual sense. The air was warmer than the day before, yet in Isis’ heart there seemed to be a void, an empty space where she felt the need for warmth. She went out, out on a walk. Opening herself up to her powers she hoped that they would allow her to fill this emptiness, which she felt sucking on her soul. The power came, her stone supplied it, yet it felt as if it could not reach that empty, cold space. The more she drew on the power the more it filled her being, enraptured her with the capabilities she held in her will. But the space inside of her remained empty and frigid. Like a vortex of unspeakable fire circling and never reaching a barren event horizon Isis could not let her powers fill the gap that chilled her. She let go of the stone and drained the power from her being, She remembered feeling warm there. She remembered exactly when and with whom she had felt warm inside. For the life of it Isis could not rationalize how or why that could have been. She had hugged a mouse and mouse had hugged back. The feeling of comfort had come unbidden. There had bee no rapture, no sensual drive, no feeling of conquest. There had just been a quiet, peaceful warmth. Now that it had left Isis wanted it back. And she knew from whom to get the secret from. It did not take her long to find the mouse that had unwittingly show her the sensation she longed for now. Her abilities to sense others had rarely found a match, maybe once in Nicodemus. And she needed those skills for the mouse she was searching for had almost no power of his own, nothing more than the most simple flicker of life, no magic, no special skills. But that was enough for Isis to locate him. She found Vincent at the waterfall. And the sight of him made her stop and gaze in wonder. Isis had planned to ask him directly, ask him what he done to him. Now all those plans were gone, blown away like spider webs in a portentous gale. The mouse stood on one of the rocks at the base of the waterfall. No, he was not standing. He was hopping, from one foot to another. In each hand Vincent held a simple stick, which he waved, in the same awkward rhythm as his hops. It was a ludicrous image. There was no music to be heard yet Vincent appeared to be dancing, somewhat out of tune too, to a rhythm only he could hear. But he smiled. A smile that appeared to echo of the warmth she was seeking. Vincent’s eyes were closed as he kept on hopping and waving the sticks, following an inaudible beat. Isis carefully tried to enter the mouse’s thoughts, knowing he would not be able to put up much of a fight due to his lack of power. At the same time, she did not want her intrusion known. She wanted to see what made him smile. There were no barriers. Isis gasped. Even when asleep minds had boundaries, weak barriers to keep intruders out. The mouse’s mind was open, defenseless, pouring out into the open for her to see, feel and read. Vincent was at the mercy of whatever or whoever could come and enter his spirit, or so it appeared. She had to take a closer look. She did. She saw. She understood.
Title: the very first image I ever did...
Submitter: marcus
Description: How times flies. This was the very first image I ever drew and colored, also the first image I ever did of Vincent. Back then Vincent was different in personality than he is now. He was the "person I wish I could be" rather than being a representation of "who I really am". I think we all go through that phase at one time or another. Either our lives are so painful that we need to escape them or we believe ourselves to be so unlovable and "bad" that we create an "alter ego" that repesents what we wish we could be, lovable, completely good-hearted, the hero who saves all even if he so over-humble that he really does not want to, something like "Harry Potter", in short. Of course this is folly. First of all, no individual is ever so wonderful, lovable, caring, humble and heroic as we wish we (or our character) could be. Secondly, by allowing ourselves, and our characters, to become as we are in reality, will make them "more human". More so, at that point we will be bale to finally accept ourselves with all our faults. After all, if not for our faults as well as virtues we would never have created such characters.
Title: Aloha Vincent
Submitter: marcus
Description: After having drawn all these images of "myself" I decided to end the experiment by drawing what I really like, NIMH stuff. So, here is Vincent, my "NIMH self", if you want. No, I don't think that I am a mouse or that the NIMH stories I write or draw are the "real reality". Vincent is just a character which I have, hopefully endowed with all my own pseronal character traits and personality faults.
Title: Aloha Marcus
Submitter: marcus
Description: Well, this was the only version of drawing myself that I really did like because it expresses my innate "goofiness" quite well. A bit of mix of some Asian styles and grafitti art. ALOHA!
Title: me times three
Submitter: marcus
Description: I hate doing pictures of myself. Don't ask me why. I just do. But so many people have managed to do it and my own family has been nagging me to try and draw my own self that I at least wanted to give it a half-hearted try. I couldn't really decide on a style to choose. I only knew I didn't want anything that would look "serious", "dark", or "dangerously cool". That is just not my personality. I once may have longed for being the "mysterious dark stranger" but I have since acepted that I am not. I am the "quirky strange stranger" (chuckles). Anyway, the one on the left is trying to adapt my own visage to something a bit "Bluth" stylish. The one on the bottom right was an attempt to go a bit towards the old "Archie" type cartoon styles. And the top middle is just a lame attempt to emulate some of the now popular, overstylized "Kim Possible" nerdy versions. I really don't like any of them that mush, but they were good fun to experiment with.

Title: Rapta through time
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just looking at the second image I ever drew of Rapta and putting it next to the most recent one, since they are both without clothes. Apart from some curvature changes the proportions of size, head, and body seem to have remained the same over the last six years.
Title: Spotting the "Peeping Tom" (Rapta)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Leave it to Rapta to blatantly point towards where she thinks the "Peeping Toms" are hiding. (NOTE: For all those male rodents out there who want to be included in the image that will show just who was "peeping", please put your name into the comments underneath one of these images.)
Title: Spotting the "Peeping Tom" (Isis)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Isis, being the sophisticated one, would most likely be pondering the implications as to the situation, most likely what punishments to dole out to the infidels who dared to "sneek a peek". (NOTE: For all those male rodents out there who want to be included in the image that will show just who was "peeping", please put your name into the comments underneath one of these images.)
Title: Spotting the "Peeping Tom" (Darla)
Submitter: marcus
Description: This probably takes place right after the three ladies decided to give up the search for the missing brush. Darla, being as keen-eyed as she is, might have spotted some male rodents trying to "sneek a peek" at the three rat ladies and is pointing that out to the others. (NOTE: For all those male rodents out there who want to be included in the image that will show just who was "peeping", please put your name into the comments underneath one of these images.)

Title: Clover walks through the woods
Submitter: marcus
Description: I can see Clover as a very dedicated individual, very close to the woods, which supply her with the herbs and tools to heal those who are sick. As such, I think she probably takes long strolls through the forest, looking for the ingredients for her medicines and checking on the wellbeing of everything that grows.
Title: Finished Ki'i

Description: Vincent, in his role as "Kahuna Kalai", is very proud. After four days of work he, which means "I", has finished the two Ki'i images he set out to carve. The female image to the left is called "Oni'Aka" (Move towards clarity/joy) and the male image to the right is "Pakukake" (Breaker of/protector from secrets). The ancestors would be proud.
Title: Kahuna Kalai Vincent
Submitter: marcus
Description: Vincent is resting, as am I, after the second day of carving two new Ki'i images from the incredibly tough Desert Ironwood (specific gravity 1.17). As such, we have both stepped into the role of Kahuna Kalai (Hawai'i), carver of sacred images, for this weekend. Until the completion of these two images there will be little NIMH art.
Title: Kona Rat
Submitter: marcus
Description: A rat wearing the traditional garb of the Ali'i of Kona, Hawai'i, Polynesis. The high chiefs of Hawaii would wear elaborate feather capes, made from rare red, yellow, and bluish-black feather, caps, and a royal bone pendant to show their rank and status. The feahers were seen as sacred and charged with "mana". The royal pendant and the cap have crest-shaped designs, common to Hawai'ian depictions of deities.
Title: Abelam Rat
Submitter: marcus
Description: A rat from the Abelam village, Sepik River, New Guinea, Melanesia. Each village in New Guinea has it's own tradition of lavish dance costumes and masks. "Big Men" celebrate the yam harvest with dances in their costumes. Such costumes can include masks, boar tusks, bone discs, yellow, red, and white pigment, and various flowers and bird feathers. Melanesian art, and that of New Guinea in particular is known for it's elaborate forms and vivid coloration. Boars tusks and bone disks were seen as a measure of wealth and status.

Description: This might be one of the reasons why so many kids like Brutus as a baby-sitter. His cooking may be awful but when he plays "choo-choo train" he goes all out.
Title: Sketch and background source
Submitter: marcus
Description: For that "Looking back" image I "stole" a black and white sketch of a chair from an online source and actually colored it digitally. I am still psyched about that. Then I had to draw a version of Rapta that would fit into the chair.
Title: Looking back
Submitter: marcus
Description: A number of people have drawn awesome images of Rapta for me. That caused me to think back when I first drew her, after I was asked to create a villain for NIMH-MUCK. I never dreamed that five years later other people would draw her as well. So I drew up an image of Balak and Rapta looking back, back to the old days, when the present that is now was never even imagined.
Title: Stella asks for training
Submitter: marcus
Description: Stella probably asked Brutus for some "not on the record" after-hours weapons training since he is a likely choice "not to talk". Since I haven't figured out what Stella's main profession might be I don't know what Brutus would get out of the deal. I am rather fond of the shadows of Stella and Brutus in this image.
Title: Stella jumps
Submitter: marcus
Description: When drawing "Mr Brown" I started out with sketches of Stella and then superimposed the "Mr Brown" clothes on top. I didn't intend for the Stella originals to be inked and colored until I was ready to revael who "Mr Brown" was. But since DB and Tenken guessed it right aways... This shows Stella doing the same backward flip as "Mr Brown", probably learned during after-hours sparring. Her parents would have a fit if they knew about this.
Title: Mr Brown jumps
Submitter: marcus
Description: An action shot of "Mr Brown", probably as he avoids some stronger combatant's slash. He may not be strong but he is fast, and very, very quiet.
Title: Mr Brown proposes a deal
Submitter: marcus
Description: Now how do I describe "Mr Brown"? He stands just about as tall as Justin but is even lankier than he is. He wears heavy brown robes with a high collar, gloves, a tunic beneath the robe, a wool hat, and a scarf hiding his facial features. In terms of his background, very little is known about "Mr Brown". Nobody by that last name lives in the colony I believe, and if there was a "Brown" family none of their members would fit "Mr Brown's" physical appearance. As such "Mr Brown" is probably not this individuals true name. Add to that that he rarely speaks and when his voice sounds like his vocal chords have been shredded, almost "Gollum"-ish. He sometimes sneaks through the woods. He is skinny, not very powerful, but rather agile and handy with what looks like an average Guard issue sword. His character is somewhat like a "spy" or a "sword for hire". One can assume by his looks that he is the kind of rat to go to if you want some covert things "done right". If only one knew who "Mr Brown" really is.

Title: Story of Oka (Step 6)
Submitter: marcus
Description: A long time ago, on the distant island of Hawaii, a boy was born. He grew to manhood, and grew much taller and stronger than anybody else on the island. Yet as he grew, so did his features become uglier and uglier. His brow was heavy, apelike. His jaw jutted and was body, showing teeth much too large for even his huge face. Since he was strong he was destined to become a warrior. He was strong, powerful, and during the wars with other islands his shark-toothed clubbed killed many. His mana as a warrior was great, but his heart bled. He did not want to be a warrior. His skill was great yet his soul cried out with every death. He longed for peace, for a life of quiet and love. There was no love for him. His features were too coarse. No woman would accept him, no family wanted him as a son. He was revered as a warrior but shunned as a man. Children laughed behind his back. The people named him “Oka”, the word used for refuse, woodchips, and dregs that are cast away, when talking about him. In his loneliness, he grew old, weak, and finally died alone. But his spirit did not rest. Never was Oka accepted in life, his deeper heart seen by those around him. Walking as a spirit he longed to be accepted, to finally find the family that would accept him, not as a warrior, but as a source of love, compassion and peace. Even as a spirit, no family would seek his protection, would make him their ‘Aumakua. So Oka drifted onward in time, alone, never accepted. When he appeared in dreams his ugly features and his desire for peace did not fit into the scheme of the people. The Kahuna's did not trust his Mana. Years went on. The world of the ancient Hawaiians went away. Still Oka drifted on alone. Then, the heirs of the ancient Hawaiians revived their lost beliefs. Carvers and new Kahunas, more free than their old counterparts, arose again. One apt in carving the ancient images to give shape and focus to Akua and 'Aumakua alike dreamt of Oka. He dreamt so strong that he went out to find a piece of Koa wood to carve Oka's image from. As he had seen in the dream he made Oka's face different, different from any style the ancient Hawaiians had used to show his ugliness and cause for his rejection. But the Kahuna also gave his body the purest and greatest power he cut mold from the Koa, purer and stronger in style and Mana than almost any other figure of modern times. So the figure of Oka was created, the body the epitome of the 'Aumakua, yet his face different from all others. Nobody sought the statue. All acknowledged the Kahuna's mastery of form as they looked at Oka's body, but the unusual face was unacceptable. Oka's likeness passed from hand to hand, to be sold by somebody who did not know that this likeness held a true spirit. Not even the tourists wanted him. Discouraged by his non traditional face all shunned away, rejecting Oka as he had always been rejected. The merchants that had aquired him even presented extra gifts to go along with the statuette. Nobody took the offer. Oka was still alone. Years later, while Oka's image collected dust, covered in the gifts to go along with it, a stranger from another land came across the image and marvelled. The wonder of seeing such perfection of Hawaiian form in body combined with such an absurd face created a burning desire to give the image a home. For this person had suffered rejection himself. He saw in the image the same difference that had always haunted him. Oka finally found a home, his Mana proctecting the new family as their 'Aumakua.
Title: Story of Oka (Step 5)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Thankfully my coloring software has a cut-and-pase tool that allows me to select all the white parts in the scan and select everything else to copy. I then paste all the characters onto the background image. Then I used the coloring software to add some fire glow to the mice and the image is done. In the days of hand-painting I would draw up a backhround with pencil, color it with the same kind of acrylic paints I used for the cels. Once cels and backgrounds are dyr I would put the cel over the background, scan the both, and then begin the cleaning process and add light effects. One day I may figure out how to acrtually paint backgrounds on the computer, but for now, that's beyond me.
Title: Story of Oka (Step 4)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Usually the funnest part of the process. I love coloring. When I was still doing it by hand I would turn the copied lines of the transparency sheet on its back and allpy acrylic paints from my fantasy miniatures to the back of the sheet, like real animation. That limited my range of colors to about 200 and meant that mistakes menta a real mess and that the transparency would have to dry at least one day. Now I use a coloring software to draw in the shadow patterns and then use a fill tool to fill both the main colors and the shaded portions. In this image the shadows work a bit differently due to the fire being at the center, which added to the fun.
Title: Story of Oka (Step 3)
Submitter: marcus
Description: The sketch is put under tracing paper, the ink is applied to the trace, the tracing paper is scanned and the scan cleaned via photoshop. That takes me the longest. Fixing broken lines, getting dust grains off the scan, that sort of thing. In the old days when I hand-colored everything I would copy the tracing paper onto an overhead transparency sheet, which would tranfert the black lines onto a clear medium, ready to color.
Title: Story of Oka (Step 2)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Step 2 is rather straight forward. I had to figure out what characters would be in this picture and how would they be located around the campfire. Since it takes me forever to draw stuff it took me an hour to doodle this up. When you don't have the talent, you need to invest the time (Chuckles!). Well, these were as many rodents as I could sketch around the campfire in an hour. This image will include Tenken, Richard, Leo, Vincent, Ayanna, Tzolkin, Elem, and Lou.
Title: Story of Oka (Step 1)
Submitter: marcus
Description: I had this idea for a story today. I did one of those deep meditations and it just "popped" into my head. It is the story of "Oka". Then I remembered somebody asking me how I do my pictures these days. So I thought, why not make a series of pictures how somebody with mediocre talent (me) tries to get an idea onto paper, eh, computer. Well, with "The Story of Oka" I had an idea of Vincent telling the story around a campfire on a beach, since it is somewhat of a tropical story. Since I don't have time to paint background by hand anymore I needed to find a picture online of a campfire at the beach. That I couldn't find, at least none that would allow me to put characters around. So I found two pictures, one of a beach at night and one of a campfire at night and photoshopped them together, using some pain tools to make the edges fit somewhat. The perspective isn't perfect but since it is only a background for cartoon images it should do. That was step 1, making the scenery.

Description: No, I am not yet going to describe what that thing is. But let me just say that there is a fourth image, one even closer, that will focus on the center of this "thing", which will make matters even more complex. This goes beyond consepts of "posession" ir "demons", but I am getting ahead of myself. The last image in this series should be finished tomorrow.
Title: The Director closer

Title: The Director up close

Title: ALIS in the forest
Submitter: marcus
Description: This would be an image of ALIS in outdoor clothing with the logo of the "Phoenix Project" on her jumpsuit.
Title: ALIS standard view
Submitter: marcus
Description: ALIS is another character that was planned for my fanfiction story, but will probably never see the light of day. She would show up in this form in the very last chapters, and I am probably never going to get that far. Just in case, I will keep her background story secret except for a few teasers: ALIS stands for "Autonomous Logarythm Intelligence Simulation" That cap she is wearing is permanently attached as a kind of a "security blanket" to her "former existence".
Title: Old Rapta in the Rosebush
Submitter: marcus
Description: Another attempt at what one of my characters would look like in old age. On NIMH-MUCK there is a role-play going on that might lead to Rapta relocating to the deeper levels of the destroyed Rosebush and rebuild it. To get an idea of what an old Rapta might look like I looked at photos of women that suffered from Acromegaly, pituitary giantism, which I assumed Rapta had a rat-version of. Sadly, people with that disorder tend to age badly as their large size puts extra strain on their bodies as they get older. Also, I saw that many people who train their bodies very rigorously at younger ages also tend to deteriote more significantly as they age. Apparently, the idea of the ancient, hard-hitting Asian warrior monk with an old but wiry body of steel is more fiction than fact. In conclusion, Rapta is depicted here as a bent, sagging, but large old crone, her weight requiring a cane, her arms clearly lost much of her muscle tone. Also, her rather nasty personality has maybe also contributed to her aging into a rather dislikable and ugly shape. Since Rapta's preference for intimidation most likely survived she overcompensates with an intimidating dress. Also, her nails and eyelashes are colored similarly to her mother. A bit of a homage there.
Title: Vincent in retirement
Submitter: marcus
Description: How would Vincent look in old age? Well, the frailties of time are inescapable, even for a NIMH mouse. But I thought that personality and character are as important to the aging process as the physical aspects. As a result, while I see him accepting frailty at an advanced age I don't think that Vincent's good-natured character would have changed. He might have gotten a bit wiser, hopefully, but still a caring and nice individual.

Title: Dr. Solomon explains

Title: Dr. Solomon (standard view)
Submitter: marcus
Description: A design for a character that was planned for my NIMH sequel story. But since will probably never finish that story I thought I'd give it a whirl in this gallery: Dr. Prometheus Solomon, an old chimp that got NIMHed. Note that he is wearing a laboratory coat with the insignia of "NTFE".

Title: Training Brutus
Submitter: marcus
Description: Another image that might have occured in Brutus' past. A new design on Leon, getting him into an age-range closer to Justin, acting as an instructor in scouting and tracking for a Brutus-in-training. At that point in time they probably didn't even want him to handle sharp objects. The fatty guard rat to the left is somebody I thought of after watching an episode of "Columbo", a somewhat grubby but probably very "knowing" Sergeant, an old warhorse of the Guard.
Title: Grief
Submitter: marcus
Description: What can we do when a dear friend is torn apart by grief, the dagger of loss that tears at one's soul? Maybe nothing, maybe a lot. We cannot take away the pain. But maybe we can at least let that friend know that he is in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers.
Title: The Twins

Description: A request by Constantine and Remus' owners. These two characters are supposedly based on two real people. I hope I got somewhat close to the descriptions.
Title: A Gift for Darla

Description: Sorry I was late with the birthday wishes. I didn't know it was Darla's birthday. Now let me think. What would Rapta give Darla for her birthday?
Title: Changing of the Guard (image 1)
Submitter: marcus
Description: I found an old, old short story of mine that I had written a few year back. It was intended as a whimsical tale taking place after the story for my NIMH sequel, a long time after. Basically, the idea was what would Brutus be like if, for some unlikely reason, he actually got to live to a very old age, frail, weak despite his size, depending on his family. The story was entitled "Changing of the Guard". I will ask Simon if he wants to post it for me. In the first image you see an ancient Brutus, his fur bleached over the years, his heavy body bent with the frailty of age, supported in his walk by his oldest great-granddaughter Miriam. Note that Miriam is rather tall for a NIMH rat as well, probably her great-grandfather's genetic heritage. And her dress actually is in the same colors as Brutus' old Guard uniform. Edit: The story is now posted at http://robin.thornvalley.com/node/395 on Robin's Fanfiction Archive.

Description: In real life I use a Dremel, but as a mouse Vincent gnaws tikis with his teeth.
Title: Finally carving tikis again
Submitter: marcus
Description: After over two years of not having enough time for this hobbie of mine I finally managed to spenbd four hours over the weekend carving two new Hawaiian Tikis (ki'i). It had been so long, I wasn't even sure if I had the "feel" for them anymore. But I managed in four hours to carve the rough shape of two of them from two small logs. Now I hope to finish these two over Thanksgiving. The two images standing in the background were carved in 2000 (light colored wood image to the left) and 1998 (dark wood image to the right). I am feeling like a kid again. I hope to carve a whole bunch of new tiki images this Christmas season.
Title: The Mask
Submitter: marcus
Description: Something that might happen on NIMH-MUCK in roleplay. I was wondering what might be the first step in how Ranger changes from his earlier "incarnation" to the one where he is all in black, wearing the skull. They say "the mask becomes the man". Maybe that was the first step of making his "outside mirror his inside". Who can tell?
Title: Sandy Shrew
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just an attempt of making a cute and alluring, younger female shrew character. The name, of course, is just a play on the term "Sand Shrew".
Title: Next!
Submitter: marcus
Description: I was looking at Don Bluth's original movie designs for Jenner, Justin, and the others while pondering changes to Rapta. I saw again how Bluth uses overexageration of certain parts of his characters' physiology to get their personality across. For example, Jenner's waist goes up to almost below his arms while his chest is very wide, enhancing his flowing villainy but also his imposing bulk. Justin's body is so lanky by comparison that he looks more like a ferret than a rat and his waist goes almost to the knee. Working with these principles I decided to make the contrast between Rapta's hip and waist even more pronounced, giving stronger "v"-shaped curves to her legs and chest-lines. I also increased the size of the legs overall to give her a more innate sense of "looming". I sharpened the facial features a bit as well to make her overall feel more "pointy" but retained the ridiculously sized nose and arms to retain her feeling of being "freakishly oversized". I had started the revamp process with the "Rapta looks insane" image and wanted to build on that. I think at least for this background it works well.
Title: Fight of The Apprentices
Submitter: marcus
Description: Since there have been images of Louise and Tenken winding up as Rapta's apprentices I was wondering if the two would ever be forced to face off against each other, kind of like "There can only be one apprentice" sort of deal. I know Tenken is holding his version of a double-glaive in his left paw. That's because Rapta trains her apprentices to be ambidextrous.
Title: Chi Gong Mouse

Description: This character has no name yet. It is based at another intern at the agency where I am doing my clinical internship. This intern practices Chi Gong and Asian healing techniques. Title: Mr and Mrs Brisby

Description: This was inspired by the movie "Mr and Mrs Smith".
Title: Grote the Insatiable
Submitter: marcus
Description: Some new idea to elaborate on the "Stagg" culture of Baltimore sewer rats. "Next to the Lord of the Clan many of the Clans in the southern sewers always keep an "Insatiable". Legend says that many ages ago a Lord of that area was so ravenous that he became heavier and heavier. He was rumored to eat his own children in his greed for food. Soon, he became unable to move. Normally, that would have lead a stronger male of the Clan to kill this Lord and take his place. But this Lord was cunning. He had kept a bodyguard of rather dim but fiercely loyal bodyguards, without any ambition of Lordship who were ready to die for their overfed master. At the same time, the obese rodent was also smart enough in keeping his Clan well-fed as well. Soon, his girth made him legend in his own Clan and in others. Any rat who could grow to such size had to be divine in a world were food was always scarce. Soon the fat rat's Clan made deals with stronger Clans surrounding it. Their Lords offered additional protection for the fat rat's divine wisdoms. Apparently, what that lump of a rodent told his fellow Lords did amount to good advice because they began to saw their fat counterpart as a lucky charm while their followers believd more and more in his divinity. This fat rat was called "Bork the Insatiable". He was so wise that when he died he had instructed a chosen heir so well in cunning that he managed to subjugate many of the neighboring Clans when the fat rat dies of natural causes. But since the rats of his Clan believed the fat rat to have been "charmed" the new Lord decided to choose a young rat of his Clan, known for his appetite, to be fattened up like his mentor, to act as a spiritual guide and beacon of power for his followers. Thus, the role of the "Insatiable" was created. Now many Clans have an "Insatiable" housed in their midsts. Fed continuously and protected by some of the biggest Staggs of the Clan the "Insatiable" is seen as the Clan's totem and also as a representation of the Clan's power and wealth. The fatter the "Insatiable" the more powerful his charm and the greater the pride of his Clan. In terms of political power the "Insatiables" know very well that their lives depend on the whim of their Lord. At the same time, the Lords who harbor "Insatiables" know the great moral value that having their fat brethren around can give their followers. Inspired by the wisdom of an "Insatiable" Staggs will follow even the most suicidal orders of their Lord. Depending on the cunning of the Lord and the "Insatiable" either one can hold great influence in the Clan. Grote is probably one of the oldest and fattest of "Insatiables".
Title: A rat named "BigNutz"

Description: A good friend of mine told me about a pet rat she had, a 5-pound, creme-colored, ruby eyed male called "BigNutz". She said she still missed him, so I made this image in honor to one of the friendliest real life rats. Rest well, BigNutz.
Title: The future of the scout?

Title: standing in the breeze
Submitter: marcus
Description: I had a lot of work to do for my classes this weekend. I did find about 30 minutes today to take a break, which I spent just sitting at the water's edge at my house, letting the wind flow over me, smelling it, feeling it, letting it, for a moment, whisk my worries away. Later tonight when I finished my work I wanted to express that feeling in an image and choose Vincent. Odd, Vincent was, long ago, created to be your run-of-the-mill, adventurous, save-the-day, gung-ho, against-all-odds mouse hero. Now he has become so much les heroic and so much more contemplative and serene. Maybe he just no longer feels the need to be a hero? Thus cartoon mirrors life.

Description: With all the emotional uncertainty Elem had to go through recently I thought it wuld be nice for him to maybe rest his mind and soul a bit. Vincent has no magic, he has no powers of the arcane or mysterious. But he has serenity when he needs it, a peace of mind he is more than willing to share. It's just something I thought about while meditating this afternoon.

Title: Meeting of evil minds
Submitter: marcus
Description: The final image. Probably one of those friendly meetings of local villains where they can network, show off their latest toys, and maybe organize their activities to make sure that nobody accidentally tries to kill the same person. I can see Rapta asking Ranger, "Isn't it a lot of upkeep to drag a whole bunch of armed cronies along?" And then Ranger could say, "Oh no. They maintain themselves pretty much. Plus, I can file them as dependents on my villain-tax returns."
Title: Showing off Krak
Submitter: marcus
Description: You all probably recognize this image from a pencil doodle I did months ago. I had this inked for weeks and never got around to coloring it, mostly becuase I wanted to include the Demon Hunters and I was too lazy to try and find individual colors for all of them.
Title: Demon Hunters
Submitter: marcus
Description: These fellows I had drawn up together with that image of Drusilla, Ranger, Balak, and Rapta. I just never dared to tyry and color it after I inked it because there were so many different characters in that image that I was too lazy to even try. My problem is that I try and give every character a unqiue set of color, whch in case of the Demonhuntser meant having to experment with a gazillion shades of red and burgundy. Also, since I always got the feel that the Demonhunters could be a somewhat "somber" bunch I dulled down their brighter reds a bit to make them less "flashy" and put more emphasis in their leaders, namely Drusilla and Ranger.
Title: A dream of Dora...
Submitter: marcus
Description: I finally found that old doodle of "Dora" I did some time ago. I updated it, inked it, and here it is. I had kept the dress design very simple, as that is one of the ground concepts for Rapta's design as well, functional, gracefully so, but simple. The colors are the same as in the "Torn Ribbons" image, indicating that this would be the way Dora could have become if she had grown up differently. Note that her eyes, while not as blood-shot as in Rapta, still retain the pigmentation loss and that her physique is still intentionally "overproportioned".
Title: Stella with spear
Submitter: marcus
Description: I went back to some of my older Stella images and wondered what she would look like if I gave her outfit a bit of trim and a big spear. I kind of wanted to give a character that looked spry, almost frail, a weapon, kind of as a counterpoint to all the huge and powerful warrior characters we have seen lately.
Title: "Don't bother. He is just too stubborn."
Submitter: marcus
Description: After DB told me that Isis was supposed to be almost as tall as Brutus I decided to make another image. Since Brutus, if Justin was an "average size rat" would probably be the equivalent of a seven foot plus tall human I tried to make Isis look as if she was about six and a half feet tall, very tall, but not freakishly proportioned. Rapta, as one can see by her ridiculously huge arms, is probably around seven feet and intentionally drawn in a way that displays her "freakishly" misproportioned body. As for the theme of the image. I can just see Rapta and Isis trying to turn Brutus to "the dark side" without any success. Not because he is magically resistant, not because he is greatly valliant,... but because is just so horrendously stubborn. "Nope! A ain't gonna do it! Push off yer two!"

Description: “Tonight Titus came to me for help. His son had again left the Rosebush at night and entered the Fitzgibbon house. He has become more unruly with every passing month. But when my old friend came to see me it was not worry for whether his son would return safe. His son had returned, cut, bitten, and covered in blood. I have done what I can for him and I do not believe his injuries will cause permanent damage. Ages will have to look at him tomorrow. What worried me, as did Titus, was that he seemed to be in shock. I have spent hours carefully opening his mind until he finally returned to his senses. He broke down in my arms, so young, yet already larger than myself, crying like an infant. That was when he told me what had happened in the cellar of the farmhouse. Titus has always worried that one day his heritage would come to haunt his son. This night it has. I do not know what drove the denizens of the sewers all the way from the distant city into the Fitzgibbon’s cellar. I do not know what fate would have them meet the son of one who had long ago escaped their world. Yet meet they did. That was the moment that deep within this young rat the terrible legacy of his inheritance broke free. For all his unruliness, for all his disobedience for rules and maltreatment of other children, nothing had prepared him to face what he did this night. Whatever rebellion was in his heart, whatever cruelties he thought he had the right to commit onto his peers, tonight, he has seen where this path would have led him. Tonight, he has faced the monster he was going to become. They must have ambushed him in the cellar. How he managed to kill them, I do not know. He is large for his age, even by the standards of his father’s kind. He emerged from the cellar. The one from the deep darkness of the city have not, and will never do so. Now he will have to choose. He has seen one future, and it has terrified him. I promised to help him contain the beast, help him find the strength to control it. I think I shall ask Justin to train him as a guard. Purpose and duty will channel the monster he fears to the good of all of us. I shall carefully watch Brutus’ progress." "Nicodemus"

Title: Noooooooooo!!!
Submitter: marcus
Description: Well, with that image LordDirk drew of Jolina and Pinky in the trenches and then Ranger having been attacked by the needle-gun mice I just had to put a humorous slant on things. What if, in all the confusion, somebody very old snuck up and found a shiny red button that spells "don't press this unless you like really, really, really big explosions".

Submitter: marcus
Description: Of course, I just had to draw an image of Korgle as he sneaks out wearing a guard uniform, his frizzled beard poking out from the hood. Heck, maybe the guards even let the old coot try out some of the needle guns on the target range. Maybe the old mouse's eyes and aim isn't even as bad as he wants his fellow elders to believe?
Title: Korgle
Submitter: marcus
Description: Ah, Korgle, where do I begin to describe how that guy came into being? A long time ago I was a member of the online roleplaying game "The Rat Race", which was also based on "The Secret of NIMH", althoug very loosely, and had the most ridicualous crossovers themes, Lord of the Rings, Sailor Moon, Elfquest, and Star Wars to name only a few. In any case, most of the characters on that game were either super-powered villains or over-evil demonic sorcerers facing against energy-blasting heroines. In short, all the characters seemed to take themselves way to serious. In order to freshen things up a bit I decided to come up with a character to defuse all that self-indulgence in some good natured hilarity. Hence the concept of "Korgel" came to my mind. For "The Rat Race" Korgel was envioned as an over the hill Rat Necromancer, an immensely powerful sorcerer who had gone lovingly senile. His fellow Necromancers would call him "The Blunder in Robes" and similar things and the only reason why they didn't get rid of him was because Korgle, in all his senility, suffered from a bad case of "dumb luck". He was the kind of shuffling old wizard that would always duck to look at a flower when somebody was about to shoot a flame of magical fire at him, he would get a crink in his back causing him to fall over backwards just when a boulder was about to squash him. Worse even, he would sometimes try to cast spells himself and muddle up incantations in such a way that they would backfire in the most horrible but humorous ways, always effecting those around him, but rarely himself. Adding to that the character of Korgel had a love for tea and bisquits and a horrible tendency to forget what personal grooming was about. One wonderful event was when he was played wearing his shorts for a hat during a Necromancer convocation. When I saw LordDirks' wonderful concept of "Rasputan" I was suddenly reminded of funny old Korgle and decided to use that concept again, this time maybe for an Elder Mouse. As such, Korgle is probably only slighlty younger than Rasputan, but with a mind that wanders so far it comes back with souvenirs. He acts in the most embarrassingly inappropirate ways, usually when the Elder meetings are in session, and thinks nothing of it to show up completely unkempt and with his pink nighshrits worn underneath his official robes. But those elders who have known him for a while suspect that his senility is just an act, a quiet sort of rebellion against the isolationist rigidity that stiffles the culture of the mouse colony. How else can one explain the gravity of some of his statements and his astute mind in times of crisis, not to mention the fact that his hearing loos seems to be rather "selective" as well. Whatever truth might be behind is apparently senile behavior, Korgle enjoys nothing more than getting stares and upsetting the more stuck-up Elders. Some people rumor that the seemingly geriatric mouse is actually very sharp and longs for a life of greater freedom in his old age. Some claim that late at night, Korgel is sneaking out from his quarters and heads to some of the guard sentry posts and fraternizes with the mice on duty there. The same rumors clam that he has a guard uniform stashed away in his closet just for that. But then again... these are only rumors, right?
Title: Rasputan wants fresh air
Submitter: marcus
Description: After having been spared another hurricane I felt like some good humor. Seeing poor Rasputan in his breathing helemt I wondered what one could do to maybe freshen the potentially sterile air he has to breath all the time. This is all I could come up with for now.
Title: more female elders
Submitter: marcus
Description: Dolores gets some new robes and the tall female elder gets some very cold, icy colors. I think I shall call her "Versa". She is not evil, but pragmatic, strong, and sometimes horrendously rational and logical.
Title: more male elders
Submitter: marcus
Description: Some new robes for Karl, emphasizing the fact that he is very down to Earth and doesn't believe in pomp. He is a physician and working scientist. The other guy is Brian, a mouse with a serious problem with his own ego. Not very tall, he is a foppish, overdressed self-serving fellow, a kind of wannabe Jenner. He has all the ambition, none of the style or brains to back up grand scale villainy. And in that way, he is actually dangerous. Never underestimate somebody with illusions of grandeur.
Title: Fear of the Storm
Submitter: marcus
Description: Okay, I am bracing for Hurricane Wilma as it is making its way toward where I live. Conditions are supposed to get bad later tonight, so I probably won't be posting any other images. Depending on how bad it gets I will be back as soon as I have power and my computer back. My folks and I got the hurricane shutters up and hope that Wilma will not come too close for us to need to evacuate. Wish me luck!

Title: "Pinky"
Submitter: marcus
Description: A good online friend of mine had once asked me to draw her a mouse. She had asked for that mouse to be a hairless female and I never figured out in what context I could draw something like that. The whole "mouse colony" idea and the concept of some of them using pumps to spray chemicals gave me the opportunity to finally draw "Pinky". In terms of how her background might relate to the "mouse colony" I have to ask her owner first. What I had envisioned for "Pinky" was that she was a young officer in the guard regiments that specialize in chemical warfare, namely the pump weaponry. Then, through some accident or heroic deed "Pinky" got exposed to whatever chemicals were to be loaded into the pump canisters and lost all her fur. Now she only lives for her duty as the loss of her hair has made her a bit of a stigmatized outcast in the more fashionable colony society. Yet her fellow "pump soldiers" regard her highly as one of their most dedicated officers. That's about as far as I got....
Title: Punch!
Submitter: marcus
Title: Elders with miters
Submitter: marcus
Description: I saw that one headshot LordDirk made of a Grey Mouse Elder wearing a miter and thought I'd try it it out on two of my own designs. Somehow, it doesn't look the way I'd hoped it would.
Title: Grey Mouse Guards
Submitter: marcus
Description: Some more possible guard concepts for the "grey mouse colony". Looking at some of LordDirk's designs for something similar to outfits that almost look like hazard material protective suits. I liked the idea of giving the various weapons and attack types a more uniform appearance. Plus the fact that you can't see the mice's faces should give them at least some air of "danger" or "weirdness". The hand-pump tank weapon was something that came to mind when thinking about a versatile tool or weapon that could spray poisons, sterilizing agent, fire reprellant, or even work as a flame thrower if filled with ethanol and equipped with a burning wick at the top. The kind of weapon that would be devastating but effective in getting rid of large predators like, oh, oversized sewer rats.
Title: Grey Mouse Civillians
Submitter: marcus
Description: Some "grey mouse colony" civillians, working off designs from LordDirk and the idea of a more futuristic, isolationist colony where the mice have a penchant for drab colors but lots of covering clothing.
Title: Grey Mouse Elder Karl
Submitter: marcus
Description: Good old Karl, not necessarily the best name for an Elder, but after looking at his old design, specifically his haughty expression and sickly green eyes I thought he might make a good Grey Mouse Elder despite his name.
Title: Grey Mouse Elder Dolores
Submitter: marcus
Description: A female Elder, as you have to agree we need some of those. Dolores was a strange design because I wanted her to look very "smooth", more so than the average NIMH mouse design to add to her mystique as an Elder. I deliberately made her fur very dark and gave her golden eyes to stress these points even further.
Title: Grey Mouse Elder Rowan
Submitter: marcus
Description: My old character Rowan, now in the role of a Grey Mouse Elder. I was wondering what to do with the guy because I always liked his rather "different" personality as opposed to the more common NIMH mouse design. Plus, his vivid blue eyes made him a good Elder candidate.
Title: Grey Mouse Elder Vaspian
Submitter: marcus
Description: Adding to the concept of the "Grey Mouse Colony" and the ideas that Simon talked about in terms of their society I decided to draw some potential "Elders", who would act as the heads of the colony. Possibly, these "Elders" would actually be the original lost six mice from the movie and maybe their wild mice mates, which measn there could be up to twelve Grey Mouse Elders in all. To go with a more pragmatic and ritualistic theme I thought that all Elders would wear the same basic dress, again, very simple, very drab, and a cane as a badge of office. I wanted each Elder's eyes to be particularly vivid to underline their potentially mystical underpinnings. Vaspian was designed by Ben (check out the Vaspian drawing in his folder) to be an old mouse that was, oddly enough, bi-colored right down the middle in the most unusual pattern, namely one side being black, the other being white. Ben had talked about ether making his character "blind" or giving him glowing eyes like Nicodemus. Since I was aiming for ach "Elder" to have his or her eyes as the most distinguishing feature I gave this version of "Vaspian" milky-blind eyes.
Title: male Grey Mouse guard with blowpipe and sword
Submitter: marcus
Description: Projectile weapons, particularly if coated with some sort of poison, might be indispensible in a world where every enemy is liable to be much bigger than you are. Since there should be no problem for the "Grey Mice" to steal some chemicals in the city, maybe even from a drug store, one could assume that they would employ tools like these to keep their colony safe.
Title: female Grey Mouse guard with spear and net
Submitter: marcus
Description: Since the "Grey Mice" are potentially beleagured on all sides from cats, rats, humans, and who knows what they might have a rather egalitarian attitude towards letting their women fight as well. After all, every able bodied mouse might be needed to secure the colony in the big city. Also, since mice are not the strongest of creatures the "Grey Mice" might rely more on weapons that will allow them to keep enemies at a distance, like pole weapons. Nets and other impliments to immobilize might be useful too.
Title: male Grey Mouse guard with two spears
Submitter: marcus
Description: There is talk on NIMH MUCK about the creation of a NIMH mouse colony, possibly located in the city. Simon and others have thrown around some concepts for how that society could look like and I decided to wrap my brain around it a bit as well. One of the concepts I pondered was to potentially make this colony a bit less artistic (less organic in design) and more pragmatic, due to the fact that they are surrounded by so many predators, including humans. Mice are not strong after all. Plus, this minimalistic appraoch and the fact that in the city the most common color would be gray made me try out a design that is a melding of medieval tunics and almost "futuristically simple" shapes, particularly in the weapons, which are hard-angled. I was hoping for a look that was different from the usual NIMH character and also not too Asian or artistic, just a very simple, down-to-earth, no nonsense design. The following three images are for mouse guards from that colony, which I just called "Grey Mice", because it seemed to fit.
Title: The Rose
Submitter: marcus
Description: Another attempt of maybe bringing forth some of the less obvious facets of Brutus' potential personality while using the original movie design. I got the idea after I came home from a very nice first date on Thursday.
Title: Brutus as a baby
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just trying to see what one can do with Brutus' minimalistic movie design. After seing the image Elizabeth Sellars made of a "Baby Darla" I just had to try this out. Isn't he cute?
Title: Hello there!
Submitter: marcus
Description: Rapta in a more "alluring" pose, but don't trust her. For God's sake don't trust her!
Title: Vincent gone insane
Submitter: marcus
Description: There have been so many images of huge, powerful, armed rats lately that I started wondering what the more horrendous thing is, a vicious rat that you know is a killer, or maybe have an unexpected, harmless little mouse suddenly turn nuts. No great prowess in weapons, no training, just cold and calculated viciousness. "The greatest of monsters lurk within the most average of shells."
Title: Siblings
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just wondered what a nice conversation between Racso and Rapta would look like where Racso is actually the one making the point and Rapta, for a change, to be actually listening.

Title: Showing off Krak (concept doodles)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Dang! I wanted to draw an image od Drusilla, Ranger, Balak, and Rapta being somewhat social and Ranger showing "Krak" to Balak. You know, "boys and their toys", that sort of thing. I also wanted to have all of LordDirk's "Demon Hunters" in the background, so in order to see how all of these rats would fit together in one image, I drew the concept doodles of them just standing next to each other dependind on what "frame of reference" in terms of size and their later positioning in the picture they were. Of course, my last inking pen just HAD to dry up on me as I was inking the first foreground Demon Hunter. I won't be able to buy new ones until Monday. So I thought I at least put the side-by-side concept drawings of Drusilla (She is supposed to be pointing towards the Demon Hunters to tell them to "act civil"), Ranger (He is supposed to be answering a question about Krak), Balak (He is paying around with Krak), and Rapta (Either asking a question about Krak or the Demon Hunters). I hope this still will be fun to look at.
Title: Torn Ribbons
Submitter: marcus
Description: Something from Dora's childhood. Children can be cruel, especially to the one that does not fit in. All Dora wanted was acceptance and friends. Yet her abberant growth, caused by pituatary giantism, always made her the brunt of ridicule. Hence hopes were shattered, dreams were torn.
Title: Together Again!
Submitter: marcus
Description: I haven't drawn to manny happy images lately, so I thought this would be a nice thing to draw.
Title: Balak ludicrously vicious
Submitter: marcus
Description: I am particularly porud of this one. This managed to turn out even more "overdone" than the Rapta version. Hence intimidation becomes hilarity.
Title: Rapta ludicrously vicious
Submitter: marcus
Description: With all the vicious rodents that are being drawn these days, one more evil than the next, I wondered what would happen if I chose two of my favorite evil rats and "pumped up" their design to ferociously that it would go from vicious to ludicrous. I can't look at this image and the next without laughing. There is such a thing as "overdoing it".
Title: Beyond the Stone
Submitter: marcus
Description: "The Stone has no power. It merely helps you to focus what already sleeps inside of you. Like a crutch, it is no longer needed once you walk on your own."
Title: Jonathan scouts

Description: A random little image of Jonathan. No real reason why. I just haven't seen many images of him done and thought that maybe he should get one.
Title: Slave to the Machine
Submitter: marcus
Description: A homage to Gabriel's hard work at the last MFM conference, where he worked the video cameras and the movie room. No to mention he almost worked himself to the bone there.
Title: Share and Share Alike
Submitter: marcus
Description: This is probably more of a metaphorical image than anything I would place in physical reality. LordDirk's image of Ranger shwoing Rapta his demons made me wonder what would happen if that process was taken a step further, sharing the two hells, demons intertwined, horrors melding to yet creat new abysses of depravity. Plus when I saw the fact that in LordDirk's image Ranger was grabbing Rapta while her arms were underneath his I just could not resist having Rapta use a "backwards clutch". Now both are choking each other, a double-bind of evil.

Description: I don't think Ranger and Brutus ever met on the MUCK, but if they did, I could imagine those two get into a discussion about who was less "fetching". Then, after Ranger would show Brutus his scarred face I can imagine the huge rat say, "Well, it's not that bad. At least you can cover your face up. Look at me. I would have to cover everything up."

Submitter: marcus
Description: In celebration of more than 1000 fan images uploaded to the Thorn Valley "The Secret of NIMH" Fan Art Gallery I thought a homage to Andy Hedgewald, the first artists to ever submit an image to this site, was in order. So, I tried to draw one of the cutest character designs I ever came across, Andy Hedgewald's "Pete Shrew", a young Shrew that was once played on NIMH MUCK as Auntie Shrew's grandson. Andy never colored his original design, which is in his art folder. I hope he will forgive me for randomly picking colors for his character. Andy, whereever you are, whatever you are doing right now, you were the first, you started it. Thank you for opening this door to us.

Title: Stella (concept sketch)
Submitter: marcus
Description: This doodle just seemed to have "happened" while I was sitting in class today. I was pondering what a female version of the Brutus movie design would look like. Then I kind of decided to try the style in depicting something that was the direct opposite of Brutus. This is the result thus far. Brutus vs Stella male vs female dark vs bright blunt vs sharp bulky vs graceful towering vs spry Her colors will most likely be very bright, silvery grey or even white.
Title: Vincent's room
Submitter: marcus
Description: LordDirk had asked me if I had a picture of what Vincent's room looked like. I knew that back in the days when I actually had enough time to pain backgrounds by hand that I had done an image of his room. I just had a hell of a time finding it. Well, here it is. Vincent is basically showing Rick and Hiro around, visibly embarassed at the mess. To be quite honest. My room in real life is even messier.
Title: You are safe now...
Submitter: marcus
Description: Just something that happened on the MUCK last night. Oh, and no, Rapta did not beat up and chain up Ranger. Darla did that. She just came by to inspect the poor battered rat.
Title: Brutus is laughing
Submitter: marcus
Description: The sixth part of the "Brutus is" images. For all those who felt that seeing Brutus being charming was weird and out of character this should be even more so. Hey, everybody needs to cut loose at some point. And you know what they say, usually the ones who are all serious and stoic on the surface are the ones that can have the deepest emotional outbursts. Either that or Justin just told Brutus that one joke about the three blind mice, the travelling salesman, and the block of rancid cheddar. If you see him, ask him about it. The joke is a riot!
Title: Brutus is stubborn
Submitter: marcus
Description: The fifth "Brutus is" image. I think we can all agree that if push comes to shove Brutus can probably be very stubborn. I kind of had a mental picture of Martin in mind when I drew Brutus in this rather childishly stubborn pose.
Title: Brutus is alert
Submitter: marcus
Description: Here is number four in the "Brutus is" series. Basically Brutus is more neutrally alert in this image, rather than full-blwon angry and charging. I thought it might be nice to start the second set off with something that one can easily relate to as a common emotional state for old Brutus.
Title: Brutus is charming
Submitter: marcus
Description: Number three in the "Brutus is" set. I am probably transgressing on some sacred rule here, but I just had to try and see if Brutus' eyes couldn't be tweaked to make him look charming, maybe even flirtatious. Maybe he is waving after some pretty rat girls while on duty?
Title: Brutus is shocked
Submitter: marcus
Description: The second in the "Brutus is" series. I anted to see if Brutus could have a look of shock or disbelief on his face. I assume this could be what he looked like when Justin told him just who it was he almost cut in half that infamous day at the Rosebush.
Title: Brutus is angry
Submitter: marcus
Description: The first image in a series of "Brutus is" pictures. Basically, I got inspired by LordDirk's awesome depiction of the original "movie Brutus". I never dared to draw him like that because with only his big, buggy eyes and the non-presence of a moyth there was really not much emotion that design could convey. Or at least that's what I thought. Then I saw LordDirk's images and wondered what would happen if one just altered the shape of those huge bug eyes around a bit. Maybe there is a larger range of emotions the original Brutus design can convey. This series is the result of that experiment. Of course, the first image is Brutus being his "normal" angry, violent self. We all have to start from the basics.
Title: Long Live The King
Submitter: marcus
Description: Well, I am finally happy with it. A whole bunch of chained, surgically driven insane rats as the result of one of Rapta's experiments in making children stories (the bad kind) come to horrendous life. Nothing like a "living" weapon.
Title: Long Live The King (color test)
Submitter: marcus
Description: My first attempt on coloring the inks, which went totally wrong. I just thought I upload under the heading "how not to do it". I had wanted to give each rat that made up "The Rat King" an individual fur color, but result was them almost looking like a bunch of color-happy "care bears". Live and learn (Chuckles!). But it also gave me an idea of turning the crazed rat's teeth yellowish for the final version.
Title: Long Live the King (rough concept sketch)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Some more details of how the various rats that make up "The Rat King" will be positioned in relation to each other. Also, I devided that rather than being connected by their tails they would be chained around the neck. And the skulls of the rats are encased by metal plates. Maybe Rapta did something to the brains of these poor creatures before "crowning" them?
Title: Long Live the King (position sketch)
Submitter: marcus
Description: Today two clients cancelled. So I was left with three hours of nothing to do. I decided to try and doodle an idea of Rapta creating a "Rat King". Normally, I don't like the ideas of "teasers", but I liked the general feel of this position doodle, so I thought, why not post it? NIMH-MUCKers may remember the concept of "The Rat King" from roleplay.
Title: Higher Spheres
Submitter: marcus
Description: I really do not know how to describe this image. I saw DB's design of Isis and remembered my own design of a younger Nicodemus, younger than he ever was in his mortal existence. Well, you can make up you own mind what this image may mean. It may mean a lot of things. It may mean nothing. It may mean both and neither. Who are we poor mortals to say what is and what is not?

Description: Many people have speculated as to Jenner's family, his widow, his children. Oddly enough, I do not think anyone ever pondered whether Nicodemus had a family. After all, when we saw his hand open the cage at NIMH it did not have the old-age warts and wrinkles. Maybe he even had a mate befopre NIMH and both were captured? Maybe they fathered many of the children in the Rosebush before old age took hold of them? Who can tell?

Submitter: marcus
Description: All of them had been stuck, some in a state of sadness, thers just overwhelmed. Each had, at one point wondered if maybe "getting away from it all" would help. What they did not expect was a muttering that sounded somewhat like "How do A works dis thing agin?", a blinding flash of light, and then finding themselves on a sunlight poolside. Each was gasping ast warm breeze, the lightness of the air, each trying to form the same question, "How did I get here?" This was a little something for all my friends who have gone through hard times lately and those trying to help them. They all deserve a bit of sunshine, a bit of hope, a bit of magic.

Description: Seeing some of LordDirk's great mouse warrior designs made me revisit old, old ideas I had for my never-to-be-finished fan fiction NIMH sequel. It had included a new kind of NIMH, run by the animals in an almost totalitarian way, very much like "animal farm". That's where the concept of "The Director" came in. But it also included ideas for new NIMH rat enforcers with futuristic gear. but it never really got to the actual design stage apart from the idea that they would wear "obsucring masks" and have weapons that could "stun or kill". Here are some discarded sketches of helmets that I wanted to look "biological" rather than clear-cut science fiction or steam-tamk gritty.

Description: At first I had wanted to give the "Strilizers" some sort of staff or club weapon that would deliver some sort of "charge", which would be set to either stun or kill. As I looked at the eyes of the mask and the hoses connecting the limbs to the main armor harness I wondered what if the connections that would deliver the "charge" were actually right in the fingertips, toes and the end of the tail, which would be the normal zones of "clawing" for a rat anyway. So, each finger, toe, and the tail-tip got "glowing stones" similar to the eyes, all of which are supposed to glow greenish in the dark giving an unsettling and definately surreal look.

Tzolkin has been wondering what kinds of robes he would like. So, one could argue that he and Vincent would go about having him try on various designs to see what fits him best. Submitter: marcus
Summary: Just three of our favorite evil female rats doing what they do best, torturing somebody. Note that this image is more anthro style.
Description: Here is my first image including Rapta in a more anthro design. You could say I caved in light of frequent requests. I used Isis and Darla as comparison to show that Rapta's growth disorder is not just causing her to be freakishly tall, but like most growth disorders causes disproportion in the limbs. In her case it means that her legs and arms are too large for her frame, which adds to the sense of "wrongness" when people see her. In NIMH style that awkwardness often gets lost because that style has physical distortions already built in. As to the topic of the image, just a couple of femme fatals tormenting a male victim.

Description: I wanted another go at drawing Vincent being evil and deranged since the first two attempts did not succeed in expressing what I had aimed for. So here he is, Vincent completely deranged. I have always wondered what makes a cartoon villain truely horrendous. Obviously, intimidating built, weapons, claws and teeth are major assets but I always thought that attitude and facial expression are the two things that will make or break a true villain. For example, Rattigan from "The Great Mouse Detective" was tall, intimidating... but not frigthening as he looked too comical in his facial demeanor and overall attitude. On that line of thought I wondered whether Vincent, if given the right evil attitude and facial expression could look creepy and frightening without making him taller, tougher, or stronger in any way. You be the judge.
