Hmm...my first excerpt doesn't seem to getting any replies...:/

Anyway, here is the second excerpt from my package. It's actually written in the context of another fanfic, Darla's Falling Angels (I wrote this up in a spark of inspiration after reading the intro). Despite this, I decided to post this for a couple of reasons: the excerpt pretty much stands by itself, and it introduces my cool villain character (and I know how some of you are just fascinated by those ).

Now, many of you are familiar with the villain who harms the body, but what about the villain that corrupts your soul? Wait...I guess you do have experience with those :D Nevertheless, I think you'll all be...stimulated by this...

(begin excerpt)

"...The deed is done, Akeris," said the black rat, his head bowed down in deference.

"Very good," said the one named Akeris, his calculating, pale green eyes looking down at body. "I shall ensure that your lord knows of your accomplishment today."

"Oh, very nice!" said the black rat, his lustful eyes gleaming with absorbed delight. "Very nice, milord." He gave a crooked grin, revealing sharp, broken teeth and supplementing his own, already acrid stench. Akeris wrinkled his nose. These Stagg rats were such crude, filthy creatures, yet their awe of him and their subsequent subserviance to his cause was useful to his plans. He absently adjusted his gauntlets as he turned around, his eager adjutant following alongside in an obsequieous manner.

"You may return to your lair for a moment; I have other business I must deal with..." The black rat went on his way, plodding through the woods on all fours until he vanished from sight, leaving Akeris alone with the body. He stood over it, a sense of domination filling him. Such power in his hands, to cause destruction even through another. He smiled wickedly as he thought of what he had planned...Those foolish Fray children. They knew not of what hid within their supposedly immaculate souls, the terrible, savage beast that dwelt within all of them, seeking to break free of its civilized bonds and wreak havoc in whatever time or place strikes its fancy. He had released that beast in himself long ago, and since that day he had lived life with a crazed vigorousness, drinking in its succulent pleasures and forbidden delights, indulging in the base, the mean, the low. It was all so exhilirating even after all these years.

Now, those children would also share in his delight, the mesmerizing fancy that awaited all who should free themselves of society, civilization, and those puerile things they called "ethics" and "conscience." His mouth twisted again into a horrid smile as he imagined their slow downfall, the blasted corruption of their souls that would warp their minds forever. He saw within each of them the beast, the pitiful, powerful creature waiting to be uncaged. Yes...he was the zookeeper. The arbiter of souls, releasing those wild animals of darkness trapped by the constraints of conduct, the plague of custom that infected them all and bowed them down to sterile regulation. He would free these children, one by one, from that and teach them his ways, make him his own, render them like he had rendered himself. He chuckled madly to himself; the prospect was absolutely delicious!

Still, his plan was not without obstacles. That James...such a gentle, kindly soul, a counsellor and protector...what a disgusting creature. It was very well, then, that he had brought his death about. He was the hinge that held that fractured clan together, the single weak link that, if ever broken, would cause their disintegration. He was also weak, pitiful, like his own, old self once was; he, according to the natural order of things, ought to perish, for only the strong survive, those willing to put aside convention and custom and strive for what really benefits themselves.

Akeris turned away and swiftly made himself hidden amongst the thick rushes; he had heard voices. From his hiding spot, he could see a group of young-looking rats approach. It was those children again, probably coming back to check on their brother. He spotted at the front that girl, Darla, who rushed quickly to the side of her fallen brother. She knelt down next to his body, a look of utter devastation in her eyes. "Oh, James..." she said, "Please, don't leave us! I...I don't know what do..." At once she began to weep, her tears a fountain of deepest sorrow. Then, Akeris saw another rat, one who was not there before. He moved to Darla's side and held her close, bracing her against his body to support her in her agony. "Monty..." she said, addressing him, and then continued to cry in languish.

"It's okay Darla," said Monty, "You still have me...we can work through this." With that, he moved his head to allow Darla to rest hers upon his shoulder. For a while, they just sat there, sharing in that mournful solitude.

Akeris sneered at bit at Monty's intrusion, yet somehow he felt...stimulated. It seemed that he had more prey to dispatch...

Now, wasn't that deliciously devious? ^__^
