I was just wondering, I know alot of people have written fan fiction based around the story of the movie, but how many others have written fan fiction based from the story in the books? I believe Simon's excellent 'Return to NIMH' story is mainly based on the books, but who else has written something from the books instead of the movie?

...I was thinking perhaps of maybe writing a fan-fic myself when I have more time, but I just can't get myself to sit down and do something so time consuming right now. I have some ideas swimming through my head, though. They're really wierd, though, I'm a real science-fictiony kind of guy, and my ideas are kind of Isaac-Asimovish.

...One is of the future, around the 2020s, where urban sprawl continues to press on closer inwards towards thornvalley, while at the same time the thornvalley rat civilization is bursting at the seams, with a population into the hundreds of thousands and the equivalent technology and mechanized industry of humans in the early 1900s, technology and sprawl that risks discovery.

Their civilization has expanded, and several far-flung colonies exist in other isolated valleys and forests far away, and their central nation at Thornvalley has trouble keeping in touch with them. One particular colony stops sending messages, and a flyover investigation by a crow in Jeremy's rat-allied reconnoisance team finds that they have utterly vanished, leaving their colony city completely abandoned with evident haste. The senate is baffled, but the executive leader, a rat by the name of Marcus (a descendant of Oscar, more commonly known as 'Racso', suspects mass re-bestialization, the course that the legendary Jenner took years before.

...but when a troop of rat scouts is sent in to investigate, a discovery is made that will shake the foundations of all rodentiendom forever...

I for one actually prefer fanfiction inspired by the books, though throwing in a bit of the movie helps sometimes, but not always.

Anyways, very cool story idea. A bit more humanlike than I tend to see the Rats, but in this case a story like that might work well...

Again, very cool story idea and I hope to read it sometime if you decide to write it. :)

I don't usually mind fanfics following either the book or the film, as long as the ideas presented therein are interesting, and by the sounds of it your idea is very good. Do try and find the time to write it. I can just imagine all the rats using miniature steam powered trains to haul stuff around the labyrinthine tunnel network beneath Thorn Valley; steam turbines delivering power to their workshops as they churn out more and more components for their vast and intricate machine network. I love the design of steam era machinery. All brass piping, pistons and cogs and the like. I can just see it now… Where's me pencil?

Also I wouldn't worry about there being a strong leaning towards science fiction in your story. You look at the book and I would say it has a core of hard science, most of which is presented in the NIMH lab sections.

Regarding there being more fanfics based on the film rather than the book: the world of the film is more fantastic than that of the novel, what with there being magic and all. Maybe that has something to do with it. Additionally, speaking for myself and my fanfic, the movie's scenario was a better primary basis for the story I wanted to tell, plus it was easier what with the magic to create a point of interest. I'm not good enough to write with the subtlety required for a successful novel based fan fiction.

Hey, you got my vote on that idea. If you start producing it let me know! Good stuff, I like those kind of stories.

One of the most popular stories on my archive was one based upon the book. When I moved the archive from a free server to karthurville, the author asked that it be removed.

Still, it was well written and highly regarded as the "true" sequel to the book as opposed to the Conly novels.

Is that what happened to it? That's too bad... it was one of my favorites, and showed that a quality book sequel could be done.

Anyway, I'd love to see more fanfics based on the books. I think they're probably somewhat more challenging to write--you're following up on some excellent source material (discounting the sequels), and you can't rely on some of the common crutches that are in the movie, like magic and the fact that there aren't so many details to be consistent with. Good luck with yours, GrizzlyCoon; I'd be very interested in seeing a story like that.

limutters something about never having time to work on Return to NIMH anymoreli (sigh)

The author wanted it removed from the archive, and when I posted a note stating "Removed per Author Request" he flew into a rage accusing me of trying to make him look bad in front of the fans. So I deleted that, and never heard from him again.

That's wierd. Never read the story though. What was the name?

The title of the story was "Mrs. Frisby and Nicodemus"

I'm not surprised. A lot of the NIMHfans I've dealt with through the Robin site over the years are/were totally whacko.

The author was very adamant that when it was removed from the site, I was to never distribute it again. So...I'm sorry, I can't send it to you.
