Hello, I am spiritpanther.... and a little nervous...this is the first time I've talked to anyone about NIMH...

Just rediscovered the movie a month ago....reopened old wounds...some older than I can remember.....

Maybe someday I'll have the courage to tell you...my gnosis..

The symbolism in the movie...amazing, a road map even..changed my life completely..

One of my favorite quotes:

"As we have said, all things are true."--weird sisters

Sorry if I've been vague.

On behalf of everyone here, welcome, spiritpanther!

First off, no need to be nervous around here, most (all?) of us are also very good fans of the movie (and the book as well; highly recommended if you haven't read it yet). As such feel free to talk about whatever you'd like, keeping in mind the rules of the board, of course.

Second, while I normally don't like looking for symbols in stories (high school english kinda turned me off to that), that is definitely one of the things that I love about this story: it's message. Mrs. Brisby, a small, timid field mouse is able to face her fears and save her son through the courage of her heart. I'm glad to hear that it touched your life as well.

Again, welcome. And I hope to hear more from you soon.

I realize now that there was no reason for me to be nervous, but I was nervous all the same.

 Got an idea for a fanfic titled "otherworld"... if I can find the time to write it. Never done any fan art... might give that a try...Anything to keep the legacy of both the book and the movie alive...

In response to your comment about high school english: in my opinion, public schools have a bad habit of messing up on subjects like symbol interpretation....

P.S. thank you for your kindness in welcoming me, it really helped me overcome my anxiety.

I'd love to see what you have in mind. And thanks in advance; I don't know about anyone else, but fan art and fanfiction are the things I like best in NIMH fandom--like you said, it keeps the story fresh and alive.

No kidding. :) Although I'd have to say that, for the most part, I enjoyed high school English (good teachers more than anything else), they do have some odd ideas about what's important to teach.
P.S. thank you for your kindness in welcoming me, it really helped me overcome my anxiety.

Again, no problem. I hope you enjoy your experience here.

Well as you might notice I am no longer spiritpanther87. The name no longer fit, so I guess I was due for a change anyways.

Hello.

We've met in the Guardhouse. Nice to see you here. If you plan to do a fanfiction or fanart or both that would be great. One of these days I might do one my self.

I find that the public system mostly needs to be overhauled but that's my oppinion. Anyway, once again glad to see you here. Though I feel that you have been here longer then me.

Actually I've done a little fan art since that was posted. That can be found here[=http://www.thornvalley.com/commons/forum/viewtopic.php?t=118]here.

Please do tell me what you think of it..

That's some pretty good stuff. I'm curious as to how you made it. To me it looks like the scene from the movie when the rats are going through the changes.

Anyway, please tell me how you built that and what program you used. I think it would fit in the movie well. Good piece and nice work!

Hey "old timer" yeah at times a change is good and we move on. Cool new name. :)

Just saw your art I`m sorry I do not know how I missed it some time ago ago. I agree with Dragon good stuff and it does look like the rats during their mutant genetic change. The rest of it looks like a cool poster from the 70`s 8)

Hello Tzolkin,
even after putting some thought into it, I just can say that this is a cool picture with a little dose of nightmare in it.

Thanks.. I'll try my best to explain how I made it, though it was two years in the making.

Okay, here goes.. The background image is a distortion of something I did in high school. I cut the letters of my first name out in different colored construction paper, then cut that up into smaller peices and glued it to a black background.

About a year later, I scanned it into the computer. (no idea why I waited that long) I didn't use only one program, I used three in total. I cleaned up the image a bit and did most of the distortions in Ulead Photo Express. Then I exported it to MS Paint for more touch ups. Then back to Photo Express about a year later(when I joined the forum) where I added the image of the mouse. (from the original screenshot) And distorted the image some more. Then came resizing. After that I exported it to MS Photo Editor to balance the color somewhat and for jpg compression....

And that's about it. :) Thanks to everyone who posted so far. .

That's cool. It sounds like you have a good grasp of using multiple programs as not always are the effects you want contained within the same program. Interesting that you added a resizing step. Simon had to resize mine from 300 dpi at 8.5 x 11" down to something more internet friendly.

Anyway once again, great work!

but how hard was it to do?

Tzolkin

Try it and find out for yourself, leejakobson. For some it might be easy, for others impossible.. The only way to find out, is to try it....
