Hmm... He's already mentioned that NIMH is among his favorite movies and is dark to boot. I don't really see anything new or interesting (as far as NIMH-relatedness goes) here.

It liisli an interesting video from the film critique point of view. Not everyone likes the same movies for the same reasons.

NIMH and Bluth were also mentioned in his commentary for Neverending Story 3.
Doug and his brother Rob were talking about how dark the first Neverending Story film was, something that they like. Rob says that's why they love Don Bluth so much because in his films (well, his 80's films) the characters go through so much but they have a happy ending so everything is okay.

Bluth's philosophy is that kids can handle anything as long as there's a happy ending.

I agree with that. As a kid I watched films with danger and excitement. I saw the Indiana Jones movies before I was in elementary school.
I think maybe that's the reason why Bluth had some critics of his work (Siskel and Ebert) claiming his movies was too dark for kids. I think critics expect animated films to be only fun and goofy.
I can appreciate that but having your character go through rough times establishes an emotional connection to the audience.

In an interview Bluth talked about the character of Mrs. Brisby in that he hoped women would be able to connect with that character.
With American Tail the character of Fievel goes through so much that the reunion at the end is heartwarming because you want him to be reunited with his family and that everything will be alright.
