...Being a bigger fan of the book than I am of the movie (the book's always better anyway, right?) I always like hearing some about Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, though this is mainly a website and forum dedicated to the film, so it's understandable that the book is not going to be brought up as much.

HOWEVER....

If you are a fan in particular of the novel, it might spur your interest to hear about a few other novels out there centering around characters of the order rodentia with a certain extraordinary flair for intellectual capacity. Books about smart rats.

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Prachett

...havn't read this one, but reading its synopsis I kind of don't find it very interesting sounding... it's a part of the 'discworld' series, which I havn't read any of, and frankly it sounds too wierd to catch my interest. Maybe I just don't like turtles enough... (unlike one particular zombie does...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMNry4PE93Y)

Nightshade City by Hillary Wagner

http://www.amazon.com/Nightshade-City-Hilary-Wagner/dp/0823422852

...This one caught my eye at Barnes & Noble. Upon reading the back cover blurb I was actually tempted to buy it right there, but realized I should be more careful with my money than to buy an expensive new hardcover book without knowing wether it's really good or not. might look for this one at my library after I'm through reading Biocentrism. Sounds fun and adventurous, and I would be shocked if this wasn't somehow very heavily influenced by Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Contains many plot elements similar to it, escaped lab rats who build an underground city? Hhmmm.... Now where would she have gotten a crazy idea like that from?

...Anyone read either of these? Know of any more books about smart rodents?

I have read this one and I think it's an excellent book. It's set in his Discworld universe, yes, but you don't need to know anything about it to really get anything. Yes, the character names are a bit hokey (at least the author knows this and explains it), but it is an exceptionally well-written story. As long as you're willing to suspend disbelief for a bit of magic (which kinda takes the place of the NIMH formula in this setting), then I can almost guarantee you you'll enjoy this story. While it does have the typical Terry Pratchett humor and satire in this book, it's toned down here and the story is, in fact, very engaging.

I might have to look at the other book sometime.

Also, this website is intended to serve all aspects of the fandom, whether movie or book-based in nature. I myself prefer the book story in a lot of ways. It's just that the movie has so many excellent visuals that I use them for the site. :)

A few other recommendations I can make:
  1. The Underland Chronicles[=http://www.iblist.com/series2396.htm]The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins - This book series isn't strictly about rodents, but it does have mice and rats, among other denizens of dark places, as characters, and rats in particular drive the story. It's an epic story about a boy named Gregor discovering an underground world after a fall into the laundry chute of their apartment. It's technically YA fiction, but it is easily enjoyable by adults as well.
  2. The Mouse and His Child[=http://www.iblist.com/book13110.htm]The Mouse and His Child by Russel Hoban - The mouse in this book is actually a toy, and it gets rather depressing in certain places as they endure hardships to return home. Still a good read.

Might also be worth looking at this Wikipedia page for more possibilities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_mice_and_rats

I'll have to give some of those books a look, but the Underland Chronicles is amazing! So amazing in fact, that I have read, twice! I've contemplated reading it a third time within the last few months, but haven't had enough time to go to the library. Anyways, my point is that it deserves atleast one good read, no matter what.
