I've mentioned in several topics that my first exposure to NIMH was in the 5th grade when we read it in school for reading class (complete with quizzes, etc)

What I didn't mention is that I paid absolutely no attention to the book. I failed the quizzes and was worried big time when I was told to compare the book and the film (which didn't turn out so badly). The movie wasn't that bad to me 'cause after all, I was an anti-reading middle school kid with a very short attention span (Though I'm worried about the present work habits I am in right now :P).

If I had a time machine and can tell my 5th grade self the situation I'm in like this...
"In the future the person who you will be is gonna be majorly affected by the book you didn't pay attention to and the film you saw just to compare with the book. You're going to be posting things on forums and are gonna be talking and role playing with people outside your own world. You are going to create your own characters revolving around the story. One of them will be a world-freak like you, and another will be nervous but sweet with a female mouse he chose to be with. The main character in the book and film will be one of the many memorable characters to you and you will be drawing her in your free and not so free time... So be prepared. Just keep the book and film in your head and you'll find the film on the Disney channel and will be like 'Hey I've seen this before!'" and then your life will change..."

"Oh and one more thing. This movie has a sequel did you know that? You have the perfect right to watch it but if you actually enjoy it and love it you're going to spend your fandom life being against 99.9% of the other fans you talk to. And yes it's one of those sequels that revolve around other characters and your favorite one although is interesting in her own way will not be a big part of the film. Sorry."

Do any of you have confessions as a NIMH fan? Or do you have any messages to tell yourself before you were exposed to anything NIMH related, like this website, or NIMHmuck, or anything.

I'm interested.

Hmm, that reminds me. I once drew an picture of Timothy as an assignment. I wonder where it is now. I doubt I'd find it...

Alright I admit...I sort of like the sequel. Some of the songs were good, I thought (not all mind you).

This may sound kind of strange coming from a devoted fan (such as myself), but would you believe that I almost did not see this movie because of the rather stupid belief that this was an animated feature and as such, it could only be good for little tykes. I guess you could say that I too fell prey to the popular notion that still holds sway throughout this country that animation as a whole is strictly child's fare. Looking back, I cannot help but think what would have happened to me had I denied myself this wonderful experience that NIMH represents. Would my life be the same?? I don't think so.

Peace :D

Unfortunately, most (probably the vast majority) American animation is aimed at young kids. This is probably a big factor in the popularity of foreign animation here. The bizzare and incomprehensible disaster that was 'Robotech' was really, really popular in the 80s, and the three shows that comprised it are still popular.

Anyways...I pretty much feel exactly the same way now as I did 25 years ago concerning SoN, except perhaps that I now have a better idea just how uncommon animation of that caliber really is. I managed to score a copy of the book quite a long time ago, and I very much enjoy reading in general. The book sequels, while vastly better than the movie 'sequel', are somewhat of a dissapointment. They are just not written to the same level as the original novel.

And the only reason I didn't liincinerateli my VHS copy of NIMH II is because it had the good sense to become misplaced permanently first. No redeeming qualities at all, sorry.

True ;) And I understand what you are saying. I'm not exactly forcing myself to hate it here. I'm just giving myself a warning 'cause you know how the majority takes NIMH2.

Here's my confession (well not as much :? ) about NIMH 2. I don't exactly hate it. I mean yeah it's one of the corniest and in a way stupidest movies that gives me awkward feelings when I watch it but there's something about it that I enjoy. It's seeing myself converting the references of Jonathan into a deeper thing in my mind. Such a deep character being such a hero in the sequel and all. I've been sayiing this recently but SoN is just a deep film and to be honest although the essence of the film is completely lost in the sequel, you really can't deny the deepness still living in it ('cause after all, it is a 'sequel' to one of the deepest films...)

Okay, I will give NIMH 2 credit where credit is due: it had at least ONE witty moment (Evil Martin: "Just say 'Yes'" Timothy: "NO!" Evil Martin: "Eh, wrong answer.") and it did lead me to discover the vast NIMH fandom, but aside from that...It isn't something I will watch again willingly...I take that back. I do have some plans for the future, just have to get the necessary software to do it. (same reason I wasted $3 on a DVD copy off Amazon).

Eh..my little confession is that SoN depresses the heck out of me. Sometimes I can become a little obsessive over it, but it wears off after a few hours or days. Its just such a good story to me :)

I always feel sad in the end of the film for some reason. I think it's because of knowing that it was the last film Mrs. Brisby's voice actress ever had a role in before committing suicide five years later.

The other might be due to the fact a lot of the other actors have died since then, and the fact we'll probably never seen an appropriate sequel.

I would also like to add that son 2 may not be the best sequel but if it was not held to the standards of being a secret of nimh sequel could it have had a good enough storie to be its own movie. I know it was a bot corny but if it where named something else it might have been recieved better but as it is a sequel to a darker movie it is expected to maintain the darker aspects the original had.

I enjoyed Choujikuu Yousai Macross, Choujikuu Kidan Southern Cross, and Kikou Soseiki Mospeada. I have all of them in the original format. What I hated was the nasty pasted-together mess that that idiot Carl Macek made of those three shows. Back on topic, even if it wasn't a sequel to such a top-notch animated film, I would still hate NIMH II, because I utterly detest musicals. That, and the animation quality was really subpar, with excessive use of completely static backgrounds and a much simpler drawing style than the original.

I have never seen high school musical, but my siblings are addicted to it. Only a matter of time before those stars lose their minds. Just like Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan.

pah I paid 20 for the movie after suspecting it to be a good sequel. I made the mistake of watching it with my sisters who enjoyed very much sining the songs out load in poor tone of voice to annoy me. they did not like the movie but get a thrill out of annoying me. I did not like the movie anyway but my sisters made it an even more painful experience
