For those of you who don't know, Dragon's Lair is an arcade game made entirely of 2D animation done by Bluth's team themselves. :) What you do is is make decisions (such as which direction to go and whether or not you should do something) with a touch of a button or joy-stick to guide your character, Dirk the Daring, through a mazes, traps, and one weird bizzare castle to rescue a princess.

As you can see, and may have heard, the game has earned so much popularity it managed to make a sequal, and later attempts at appealing to audiences by copying them to PC and making a game to the NES(Nintendo) and recently the Gamecube. However the games now-a-days, especially the NES version, are looked down upon as the wrost games ever made, mainly because nobody seems to like how you only choose where Dirk goes and certain things he does instead of controling him completely.

Now onto the reason I made this thread, I recently purchased an item (which you may have seen at the end of one of the vids above) called Dragon's Layer 20th Anniversary Edition in which both games and another of Bluth's work called Space Ace are on DVD where you can play the game, watch the game, and even view extras on production with Don himself about the game's production.

I must say, these games are great! The animation is so fluent, so alive, so...Bluth! Though they are all very challenging, they are worth the play, regardless of how many whiney gamers tend to downrate it. Space Ace is good too, a lot more sci-fi and actiony, not to mention harder. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=0v0f9L1lIi0[]http://youtube.com/watch?v=0v0f9L1lIi0) I even managed to play the Gamecube game called Dragon's Layer 3D in which you're actually allowed to control Dirk and his movements, it even offers a tad bit more to the story than the original game did, and a 2D intro movie by the Bluth team. I didn't like it at first, but once I got the controles and gameplay down I got used to it right away and it suddenly became one of the funnest games I've played on the Gamecube.

Oh yeah, and somebody decided to go against Don Bluth and made a corny cartoon series out of the whole thing. When will people learn to just leave Don's style and mature work alone and reframe from turning into more "family fun" garbage"?! :?

So what about you guys? Have you played or heard of anything Dragon's Layer or Space Ace related?

Where can I get a copy of the GC version? I've never even heard of it, but if it's Bluth it has got to be good.

But I have noticed a lot of quality Bluth animation has been turned to cheap flicks. (Land Before Time, American Tale, Secret of NIMH ligagsli)

From what I've seen, it turns out they have a Playstation 2 and Xbox release as well, however both games are incredibly hard to find. I came upon the Gamecube version at my local rental shop. I've never seen one copy on either system at stores such as Gamestop, EB Games, or Game Crazy. :( I guess the easiest way is by internet.

Ah. Interesting. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for it if I find myself on Yebay. :P

Dragon's Lair, now that's a name that takes me back a ways. I never got a chance to play the LaserDisc classic myself but the animation and such I have known forever. I'm pretty sure Bluth worked on the game INinja as well.

According to his Wikipedia entry and other gaming websites, he did. For the cinamatics, anyway.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Bluth[]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Bluth) I had no idea he worked on other games. :? A shame that Dragon's Lair 3D didn't work too well, it's pretty tough to play if you're unfamiliar with Dragon's Layer in general and wish to master the game out of being a Bluth fan. Hopefully he'll try again someday and get better, I-Ninja is said to be an "unappreciared classic" classic, afterall.

I (Simon) have final say in the interpretation and execution of any rule or consequence.

If I feel that people--anyone, not just you--aren't playing nice, I'll start deleting and locking threads, and possibly even suspend or ban accounts. If you--or anyone else--can't abide by that, then this is not the place for you. You've been given a couple of warnings now, so you should have a good idea of what's acceptable and what's not. (And, hopefully, so should everyone else. You'll notice that I didn't delete just your posts.)

Let's see if you can put that knowledge to use. I don't think it's too much to ask for people to act like responsible adults here.

I read the post. Again, i haven't done or said anything nasty or untoward to anyone.

I do have the deleted posts archived, so I can refer back to them, and I stand by my original decision. In any case, I wouldn't have deleted them if I thought that there wasn't a problem. If you have further questions about my decision, please PM or email me.

In any case, I think you would do better to instead of denying culpability, to understand better why I felt that they should be deleted. I'm the one you have to worry about, after all.

Hmm, there was an old PC game for the early Windows systems called Silent Steel. It was arranged in the same way that Dragon's Lair was, except it was live action instead of animated. I remember I loved that game, but never could find the full version, anywhere.

You know what signs to look for in an incredibile artist or/or animator? All the cheapie studios try to copy their work and most of the time, turn their ripped off look into crap.

I had the original Dragon's Lair for my family's old laser-disk player. Man, it was hard, but it was a Don Bluth masterpiece, so I played it a lot.
