I found this wierd article[=http://www.snopes.com/photos/food/rats.asp]article about rats be food for humans to consume. The images are disturbing so be careful if you like rats a lot. :wink:

They do eat them in both Cambodia and Vietnam, it wouldn't suprise me if China did as well.

Yes, some cultures eat rat. This I know for a fact. I believe some even start the cooking process in some cases with the rat still alive. This is where it gets disturbing for me. Poor little rats. :(

Indeed individuals from cultures other than our own do many strange things that might seem alien, even repulsive to us. But let us remember too that our customs and habits probably strike them as just as strange. For example; in certain parts of this country, frog's legs are considered a delicacy. Come to think of it, I cannot help but wonder what some of the immigrants coming over here for the first time must make of our "Western" diet as a whole. What with Taco Bells, McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC joints churning out billions of dollars worth of processed godknowswhat, I say that we should not be so quick to point the accusatory finger.

@NIMHmaniac;

I don't think anyone was 'pointing fingers' at what other cultures consider 'good food' just that this being a very rodent-favoring group, that it might be of some interest to some extent.

I have heard of a culture that makes delicacies of raw duck fetuses. While I've never been anywhere near there (naturally), I've seen it on TV.
To add to that, I also know of a show on the Travel Channel about foods we would view as odd.

True. I've heard of people who cinsider bugs a delicacy. Still, I can't abide the thought of eating rats. Especially after seeing Nimh.

To Xavier,

I understand your point completely. My statements were from a general point of view and were not meant to lay the blame on anyone. Still, I think that even you would have to admit that our society as a whole can be extremely selfish and ethnocentric at times. Long story short, the point I was trying to make is that while people from other lands and cultures may do things that may seem strange to us, we probably come across as strange to them as well. I think there was an old Indian proverb which simply stated "Walk a mile in my moccasins."

I understand, I just find it funny you bring it up since differences in culture is a pretty obvious thing for me. I'm typically very interested in differing culture, primarily because its different. I don't think I specifically expressed the act being wrong, just a bit disturbing in the fact that -some- cultures, if I recall correctly will start cooking the rats -alive-. I can't help of thinking what it would be like if I were being cooked alive, not very pleasant thoughts.

Just in case anyone wants any more of my opinions, I respect and am interested in several cultures (Native Americans for starters). However, there are some practices I will never do in my life.
