Hello to all you good people out there. I just thought that I would let you know that today was the day, 21 years ago that I saw Secret of NIMH for the first time. What an awe inspiring experience that was. Even today, 21 yrs. later, the experience remains as fresh as ever in my mind. At the time that I first saw this movie, I thought that it was the best animated feature bar none that I have ever seen. In the ensuing years, very little has occured that would force me to change my opinion. I'm not saying that there have not been some great and noble efforts, but Secret of NIMH will always be numero uno in my book.

Peace 8)

I have to agree.

Even seeing the movie at the age of 6 back in Germany on a rental tape it was still the greates experience of animated cinematography I ever experienced.

There is not much to add. Except that TSoN is a perfect example of how it is the mystery and story in a movie that make it great, not just a deluge of special effects.

To Mal

I would have to agree with your final accessment of this feature. Too often nowadays, the studios attempt to bowl us over with special effects, but they forget about the main story or plot. Without this essential ingrediant, the picture falls flat on it's face.

Peace :D

I saw SoN a couple of days ago and I know that's going to be a movie that I can watch over and over again without getting sick of it.

When it comes to using special affects, it's nice when it's in a few scene, mainly when there's a cliff that's being looked at :? sort to say, but when it's used in eveything.. it's not impressive.

yes i have to admit some of the special effect in SON were a bit well how they say in lamest terms "goofed" for example when ms brisby and justin and nicodemus are going under the house in a small boat nicodemus opens his eyes wide at ms. brisby allowing you to see a exposed nothingness under his eye brows showing parts were they attached his well special glowing eyes yes i could count how many goofs there were in SON but still the movie is still the best animated experience you will ever find out today

lets see about 4 goofs on special effects/animation

Yes, "The Secret of NIMH" is still the best animated movie for me. Its such a great movie, that I have not discovered the animation errors even when I have seen it every evening at least partially. The few bugs I have noticed were mostly missing animation frames (only noticed in slow motion) and things that only make sense with an additional inserted scene (like when Martin and Auntie Shrew are yelling at each other face-to-face and then suddenly Auntie Shrew is standing alone in the room).
But someone must see this in the context that Don Bluth and his companions were forced to rush production. Originally the movie should be released during Christmas 1982. But because MGM didnĀ“t give more money they needed to finish the movie before the already allotted money run out. That they were able to put together such a movie in the little time left is just incredible!

when i first saw the movie i did not know what it was about even after i watched it i was about 4-5 but the art work in was what made me like it what i thought at that time was it was about a mouse that was brave and was trying to save another mouse. but other than that i did not understand about jonathan or his relations with the rats but i saw from mrs frisby that she was afraid but she was still brave. it was what taught me what braviery is.

Even tho the post is old, NIMH carries on,

We are going on to the 23rd year of this movie, I can not be changed unless some thing better comes my way.

It is coming close to the 25th year and I hope at that in time that (powers that be) would put this movie on the "BIG SCREEN" as to celibration to a classic. the first time I saw the pre-veiws to the movie in 1982 on T.V. and liked it ,but I failed to go to see it , saw it on VHS in 1984 the word is "Blown away" have not been the same since I was introduced in to this, I was 27 years old at that time and in all that time no animation movie or T.V. show could change my mind . :)

Also I hope that on the 25th year that if they will not bring this "classic"back to the big screen,(dream on) at lest give us a better DVD with all the goodies 8)

classics seemed to always come back and i hope it does but some times they dont keep faithful to the original art work. so if it is brought back on screen i hope who ever does it is not stupid enough to try and change it.

I think I'd rather have the better quality DVD release myself. By the time either the DVD release, or for the odd chance it comes back into theaters, I hope to have a nice DLProjector, with a good 5.1+ audio setup, in a room I can "darken" efficiently. Basically, creating my own "Theater". I'd rather have the quality for the countless times I'll watch it at home, rather than pine over seeing it one more time on the 'real' big screen. 8)

Maybe they'll be nice and give a re-mastered 'Blue Light' DVD when the technology becomes more the norm in North America? :D

wouldnt it be cool if it showed up remastered in theaters then on dvd. that would be sweet.
