I'm sure that somewhere, in the back alleys of thei forum, someone has already posted this, but i couldn't find it and couldn't resist. I pulled this off a page of quotes by Don Bluth i ran across today, and had to post it:

I cannot explain why they made that sequel to Secret of NIMH. Because they claim that it the original didn't make money, so what was the enthusiasm to make a sequel?
-Don Bluth

I found that just too funny not to share. (for those of you wondering, the site is: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/d/don_bluth.html )

Heheh, I knew he would be disappointed. My question to him is that did he ever let the people produce NIMH 2? He may not have and now he must be very disappointed on what happened in 1998.

I bet he never knew of it till it was made. But why didn't he stop it from being sold I don't know..

He couldn't have stopped it from being made if he had tried. MGM owns the rights, and they'll pretty much do whatever they want with Secret of Nimh - Regardless of what Don Bluth/Gary Goldman say.

Yea but since Don was the creater doin't they have to let him know.. And let him put his input..

Cedric

SirShane has a point. MGM owns the rights and don't legally need Mr. Bluth's involvement in the project. So they can release a sequel to it and make it as crappy as they please (though I also believe we could've sued them for doing just that).

Mum they should have a law for that

Cedric

13-12-2006 17:11:33

Yes. No production company shall herin be allowed to create a sequel or prequel to an existing movie for the sole purpose of aquiring extra money. This may be the primary motive, but all companies shall take precautions to make the new movie at least as good quality as the original from which said movie is based off of.

More like the production company as a whole should not own copyrights, since companies don't die, a loophole in the copyright law which insures that their control of something lasts pretty much forever. The copyright should've stayed with Bluth, and the production company should have to consult him to use the ideals in the film.

That's a great idea. Leave the property in good hands that won't ruin it with a crappy sequel. Bluth could have handled the property better then MGM. If he wanted a sequel, he probably would have made one as good as the sequel MGM didn't make (lazy, stupid? you decide).

I've heard that if he had done a sequal, he would have played around with the idea of Martin being evil. If anything, I think it would have been more effective if Timothy was evil and in a more convincing way. No english accents

Actually, I think he said he would toy around the thought of Timmy being evil, not Martin.

Cedric

I heard the same thing. If he had wanted to do a sequel, our little Timothy would be the villain. All bow to Evil Timothy
Evil Martin was just a pushover who was too charged with evil electricity to think like anything more than a weirdo pretending to be an evil person.

Man, I've never even seen "Timmy to the Rescue" and I hate it.

Cedric

You've never seen it? Do you realize how lucky you are to have been spared the torture (though I tolerate it for lack of a better word).

Agreed! Normally, I don't mind singing in Animated movies, but this time I'll make an exception. Also, it seems wierd to have singing in a sequal to a move with no singing in it.

To be fair, the feeding Timmy scene had a little bit of singing in it but it wasn't a full blown sequence, just a mood setter.

Cedric

To be even more fair, it could be worse. They could have written endless musical sequels like a certain other Don Bluth movie (The Land Before Time). And did I mention some of those songs sound like they were written by tone-deaf children.

I hope to god they're done with The Land Before Time. I hated Evil Martin's song when he tries to convince fake Timmy to become evil. I almost destroyed the T.V.

No more Land Before Time sequals!! For God's sake, let it die already!

Tzolkin

Agreed. All those bloody sequals... Eee! And my nephew is coming up at that age where he'll likely want to watch all of them (2-year-olds don't really notice poor quality animation. I can attest to this personally as I actually remember being one) Someone pass the earplugs, please. n.n;;

Not one of those sequals can even hold a dung beetle to the original, let alone a candle. :P

Land before time had a good run, but how many sequels are there? 12? As for NIMH 2, Tzolkin, here's your ear plugs. I don't understand why they would make it a musical though, it doesn't go along good.

But in Land Before Time's defense, some of the sequels did clear up some mysteries from the original and a couple others did have semi-decent storylines minus the music.
An example of the former can be found in one of the latest sequels, where Littlefoot's father is introduced. Didn't everyone wonder what he was doing in the original (granted that may not be what Bluth intended in the first movie).
For the latter, I think a lot of the first sequels were fairly decent. However, after the 5th or 6th movie, it started getting old. All I can say for those people who make these Littlefoot sequels is, "Enough already, time to move on."

On the Evil Martin song. When I listen to it, I knaw on several strips of raw bacon to keep what little sanity I have left. It also helps keep me from dying of cheap music poisoning.
