Don't you just hate it when people just barge in your hobby negatively?

Well, sometimes in my case, the reason why they do is because I show it off to often. But for people like me who don't play sports, or video games, it's difficult for me to talk about theire hobbies.

Someone told me that to be succesful socially, we shouldn't talk just about what we care about or they'll think you're a boring person. Well that person does have a point in some ways, but this statement is very unfair for people who have their own hobby.

Anyway, "Don't you think your too old for that?" is one question. People looking at my computer and seeing me going on a site of artists drawing a bunch of random rodents (in THEIR point of view) is fine. But then saying "okay HolyArrow that's just sad." etc is rude, and depending on the person, very offensive.
Later saying "God I'm just kidding" is just a lousy excuse... You said it regardless to whether your kidding or not.

God! if it's sad then leave me alone! Go play games and do sports! Wel

Have people had that experience?

i can see your side but you can not expect me or any one to agree or dis agree with you until we hear both sides of the arguement. for example my brother often complains that i bore him with my conversations on subjects he does not want to hear about. his arguement is that they seem to be all the same and rather repetetive. my arguement is that it is what i am interested in. but even now i am not able to represent his arguement in full because i want to boost my arguement. we all do this wether or not we mean to is irelevent. based on your side of the storie i would have to agree with you but i wont make full agreement with you until i have both sides of the story.

I would have to agree with leejakobson in this area. In the other post about people doing the "just joking" thing we can be familiar because it's a generalized response and actually quite basic. This, however, is very central and often very sensitive.

I don't mean anyone any offense, but my response to finding out or having my ear filled with the specifics about some weird fetish (unintentionally) would probably come across as rude. On a minor scale, I'd be iclined to agree with whoever made such comments on the grounds that there's always the extremely high likelihood that having a hobby takes lots of time away from work, school or family. In those cases, were someone to try and talk to me about their hobby, I'd be friendly and pay attention and I'll probably even enjoy it, but that goes through my mind every time someone talks about a hobby; I think, "and what's suffering in your life because you spend so much time perfecting a hobby?" Not to mention the financial implications in many cases.

When people (it used to be my parents) got angry or remotely frustrated with me for spending time on hobbies or having particular hobbies, I always tried saying it was my social release or something that furthered a skill, but if they persisted I had to think rationally and put that hobby on the back burner for a while.

And that's my two cents.

¡¡Hola a todos!!
The culture changes, the language changes, the habits change but there's something that never changes: "Aren't you too old for these things?"
The typical nerves-squash phrase of parents and/or friends who thinks that they know what is "normal" at a certain age and what's not.
"Ooops, I'm sixteen now so I have to extirpate the part of my brain that tells me that I like Nimh and Thornvalley and for God's sake these silly rodents drawings! Can someone pass me the scalpel?"

Lets put on a scale the good and the bad that this hobby brings to us: for the good we have meet many great friends, our imagination is constantly stimulated while drawing, writing or RP at the Nimhmuck and for those who're not natural english speakers even improves the spelling. Ok now for the bad, or I'm too blind or I have nothing to put on the scale (that's of course if you don't obsess because any obsession is bad no matter which)

So, when someone hurls at me the "Aren't you too old for these things?" I just look directly to the eyes of him/her/it and say "Oh yeah? Then tell me what's supposed to like at my age, and the next year, and next, and next... "
I don't know, maybe there's a cosmic schedule that shows what each human being has to like at each age.

Don't ever be ashamed of your hobbies cause they're a very important part of your personality and express your freedom to choose what you like, and don't let the others tell you what your hobbies must be, because until the Cosmic Schedule appear, we are free to be what we want to be, at the age we want to be.
A no age limited hug! :)

I've been told that NIMH is a movie for kids. Well, I'd put it up against any movie any day. No so-called adult movie ever drew out the emotions from me that NIMH did.

people should really stop trying to make cultural norms they tend to be very upsetting when you come across people who dont agree with your terms of right and wrong.

Hey, leejakobson, I have a very benign question. How old are you? I'm just curious, so I don't expect you to answer if it's at all uncomfortable for you or you'd rather not say. Just thought I'd ask. You're the only one I don't have at least a ballpark idea on. :D

Wow! Cool beans; we're roughly the same age, then. :P (By the way, to anyone, what does "razz" mean in reference to the emoticon I just used???)

I'm single, too, and I'll probably be that way for... well, some time. It'll be a while before I'm through with law school, and I'd like to have a good job before I'm tempted to have a serious relationship. Though there are a total of four different girls I "appreciate" and wouldn't mind being something more to (in groups of one, mind you... heh). But that's for the future.

Oh, where is "the mysterious shadows" located?
