Domo!

Another opinion question here.
First of all, basically Jenner is the main villian of "The Secret of NIMH," but I said earlier, Jenner is one exception in which is a villian that I actually like. I like Jenner probably because he's so much of a villian.

Well, here are the characters that I dislike from the movie. They are... the Fitzgibbons and Dragon.

Here are some reasons.

1. My obbsession towards animated mice (and in this case, rats) -
"Get some of those rats on the farm!" :x
"I want those rats exterminated!":x
If I were bad-tempered, I would have been throwing a chair at the computer screenli when I heard these quotes. They don't even know what the rats are up to, and they just want the rats to die. Seriously! I know, the rats are stealing the lights, humans have hated rodents all along. Personally I just can't stand people trying to kill rodents without even knowing what's going on.

A non-NIMH example is...

"AAAH! Snoops! A mouse! Oh kill it! Kill it!!!":x - Madame Medusa from The Rescuers

anyway, here's my second reason.

The Tractor
Did Fitzgibbons even know that there were animals like rabbits? He can't just kill the rabbits and other animals purposely!

Billy caught Mrs. Brisby with that cone thingy (What is it anyway? Does anyone know?) without knowing that she's a has a family (Which happens in so many stories such as Finding Nemo.) Well, Billy I will forgive 'cause he's an innocent kid and 'cause he gave Mrs. B a chance to know that NIMH is coming. Billy! You're lucky.

Dragon's one of my dislikes also. Reasons
- He's the one who killed Johnathan
- You call that a cat? He doesn't even meow!
I'm not exactly a cat fan, I prefer the mice. But I don't hate them. I like good cats like Rufus from the Rescuers (again!?) and Tiger from An American Tail (Voiced by Dom DeLuise!!!)

Anyway, it might not make sense to some people, but it's thins feeling where I just want to yell at those types of characters

"Dont' you get the situation!? They're mice (or rats)! They have stuff to do! Leave them alone! Don't just kill them!!!"

Kinda long to explain my explanation. But what are your impressions about the Fitzgibbons? I know many people don't usually care about them (Except The Tractor and Dragon) but think about it...

What do you think?
(Actually, Fitzgibbons is the one who let's Mrs. B and her family survive. I hate it when this happens! The person you dislike is doing some good things.)

Well, I have a hard time blaming the Fitzgibbons much, since really, they aren't acting maliciously. As Mrs. Frisby mentions in the book when the Shrew comments that someone ought to drive a tractor through his house to see how he likes it, without the farmer, they wouldn't have nearly so comfortable of a living, as they're able to glean the leftovers from the garden for food. Sure, Billy's being a jerk, but he's not acting any more maliciously than a regular 12 year old farm boy.

As for what they said about the rats, it's more explicit in the book that they're stealing more than just electricity from the farmer, they're stealing grain and seeds too. If rats were eating up your livelihood, you'd probably feel slighted too. And the rats themselves recognize that what they're doing is wrong as well.

Dragon, I understand. You're not really supposed to like Dragon. The main thing is that he's necessary to move the plot along. Without Dragon, NIMH would be half the story it used to be, as you just removed a major source of tension. That goes double for Madame Medusa.

Just my $.02

My opinion of the Fitzgibbons was that they are a stereotypical rural american family completely oblivious of what's going on around them. They are ignorant, so in my opinion they are pretty much innocent.

My opinion of Dragon is everything evil should be, including mindless. Pure primal instinct and not much else.

Billy caught Mrs. Brisby with that cone thingy (What is it anyway? Does anyone know?) without knowing that she's a has a family (Which happens in so many stories such as Finding Nemo.) I agree. And in doing that Billy made a major contribution to the overall plot.
(And the cone thingie is a colander. I use one occaisionally to make blackberry preserves.)

Billy ued what they put blackberries in to catch a mouse? (Not that Mrs. brisby is dirty, but I wouldn't do it if I were Billy :? )

Billy most likely did not have much time to think of what to grab to use to catch Mrs Brisby she was running at her top speed so he may have used the first thing that he saw, those little mice are fairly quick. When I was a kid a field mouse got in to our house and I caught It with a cowboy hat...What?... Why are you guys looking at me like that?...Hey, I took the mouse and let him/her go back outside

It’s occurred to me how lucky Mrs. Brisby was. Being a farm kid, Billy’s first impulse could just as easily have been to stomp on her or let Dragon have at her. Good thing he turned out to be enough of an animal lover to keep her alive, if only as a caged pet. And of course, as HolyArrow pointed out, his actions proved to be just as pivotal, actually more so than Mrs. B, in the Rats being warned about NIMH.

By the way, Frisby to Brisby wasn't the only name change from book to film; there was also Fitzgibbon to Fitzgibbons.

True, but that was an extremly minor name change. Anyhow I really didn't care much for the Fitzgibbons, as for Dragon, he's basically the feline from hell shock , seriously I remember watching SON for the first time and I jumped out of my chair when Dragon first appeared on screen.

I could not agree more. As you properly stated, the Fitzgibbons were not acting out any real malice towards the Rats of NIMH, they were simply reacting to the reality at hand as they saw it which was the fact that the rats were indeed not only stealing electricity, but seed and grain as well. In fact if my recollection from the book is corect, the stealing over a period of time had to be increased at least until the rats could fully implement "The Plan" so to speak which has everything to do with them becoming a self-sustaining society without any help at all from the humans. As for Billy??? He's just aa kid who really does not know any better and like any normal boy his age, is apt to be a little implusive. Dragon also cannot really be cast as a villian either... He's just doing what any normal cat would and indeed is born to do and that is to kill period. It makes no difference whether it's a small bird, a mouse, or a rat from NIMH the fact remains that in order for him to survive, he must kill.

Peace :D
