I saw a topic in which Hazy Dreamstar asked about ideas for a crossover. That made me curious about crossovers...

A question for people who understand what's good and what's not...

If I were to write a crossover with NIMH and something else, what might work?

'Cause I once tried to write a crossover of NIMH and The Rescuers back when I just started NIMH. But I thought of it for a while and realized that it made no sense at all :( I guess the "mice" connection does not mean it works for a crossover...

So, how do fan fiction authors make good crossovers?????

Here's another thread about crossovers: http://www.thornvalley.com/commons/forum/viewtopic.php?t=117

My post is here:

My opinion on crossovers is pretty much the same as it was then--it's difficult to do, and usually works better if it doesn't take itself seriously. Usually one story becomes 'subservient' to the other in order to make it work, continuity-wise. For instance, in the Out of Range fanfic that I mentioned in my other post, the author has to alter the setting somewhat to make the NIMH mice/rats able to interact with the Rescuers and Rescue Rangers characters. Basically instead of them being a completely isolated group of rodents trying to make a living for themselves, they have to become part of a worldwide community of rodents (and other animals), which is why the Rescue Rangers, et al, know about them. They're still more on the isolated side (think Amish), but they have to have dealings with other rodents, and the aspect of NIMH heritage seems to be downplayed because of that.

One other fanfic that I can think of is the Secret of Sherwood Forest. In this one the NIMH storyline is almost completely subservient to the Robin-Hood style setting; which is to say that (even though it's a great story) mostly the characters are transplanted into the Robin Hood setting and changed into foxes and rabbits and such.

If you're wanting to write a fanfic, I might suggest trying to do a strictly NIMH fanfic first, to get a good feel for the characters and settings and such. Then you'll more likely be able to identify what is intrinsic to these characters and settings and so forth and what can be changed to fit the crossover without destroying too much of the feel of the original.

Anyway, sorry if that sounds a bit pessimistic; it's just that I've seen a /lot/ of bad NIMH crossovers. The above two are the only ones that I've liked so far, that I can remember.
