i am just curious how did everyone pick thier user names, and should they be set in stone or should they be easier to change then opening a new acount.

Jam

05-04-2005 17:30:28

Yo!

When I came up with my user name I basicaly just used the firt three letters of my name: Jam-es. Jam is one of just a few nicknames I have been given over the years such as:

-Pongo
-Jim
-Jimmy
-Jamie
-Big Jim (0weing to the fact that i am currently 6ft 4 inches and still growing I might add)

-Little James
- Boss

Also the first three letters of my e mail spell out Jam so the name kind of stuck in my head!

Pwesonaly, I don't see why people would want to change their usernames. After all, we all made them we must like them if we chose to be known as them on the forum.

Still, if they want to change them for whatever reason then I think that they should be allowed to without to much difficulty.

L8tr!

Jam.

maxx

05-04-2005 18:50:58

My screen name? Well I was thinking about naming it as comic book character, but I just love the name max. So I just added Maxx with two x's.

Simon

05-04-2005 18:53:01

Well, the name Simon came about because of two main things: I wanted to join NIMHmuck and Seoman, which was my former screen-name didn't really fit there. So, Seoman became Simon.

As for how Seoman came about... when I first got onto the web and began dabbling in creating websites, I wanted to sign up with Geocities, and so, I needed a screen name. At the time, I had been reading the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series by Tad Williams, and the main character in there was named Seoman. I identified with the character, and since I didn't have any other ideas--at least nothing that wasn't already taken--that's what I used. And I still do, to an extent, today, though usually for other websites.

As far as the name changing thing goes, I can change people's usernames, but they've got to have a really good reason for it. I think that changing names willy-nilly makes things more difficult for the people on the forum than it needs to be.

oh good you are not mad at me i was not sure if you would get ubset about the post i set. i am glad you did not. i say this cause some times people get touchy about thier web sites design but you are pretty cool about it.

Whiskers57

That is a great question Leejakobson,
When I first got a computer and went on line I needed a E-mail address and that comes with a kind-a nick name I was always called "Whiskers",
1. Becuase of my style of facial hair or the lack there of :?
2. my close friends knew of my love for "The Secret of NIMH" and called me that in lu of the rats in the story. I tried Whiskers on line but it was already used, so I used "57" at the end of it, the year I was born.
but that is not set in stone, at another animation site forum I`m known as Desert Mouse (Because I live in the Mojave Desert) & peppey at another , but "Whiskers 57" was the first and this forum was the first :D .

NIMHmaniac

10-04-2005 12:19:46

If I may add my two cents worth; I too use multiple nicknames for other sites. You know me here as NIMHmaniac which was easy enough (if not exactly original) for me to come up with because of my love of the movie "Secret of NIMH." However, on some other web sites, I'm known as Redrider, Webfire, & Netseeker, :)

TimothyB

10-04-2005 16:12:36

I usually blend things togethor to make a name.

My current nickname is just my middle name with the letter of my first name at the end, TimothyB. As a bonus is also looks like Timothy Brisby.

My previous nick was Ravepro, which was based off an ATI card I had just bought called Rave II, then they also had a model called Rage Pro, so blended the names togethor. I probably wouldn't have done that if knew it was going to be confused with techno raves and such.

Dragon

10-04-2005 23:57:13

I have many names. My name here I chose because I didn't think anyone else had it or would want it. I don't like having numbers in my name unless they're significant. That is how I usually choose a name.

On the muck I use mythological names. This is because it is easy to choose a character archetype and a relation to the character, though I don't follow the descriptions to the letter and will add my own things to make it interesting. But they more or less represent the character.

Tzolkin

11-04-2005 06:19:35

Hmm, tough one.
I choose a name based on if I like the sound of it and it has some kind of symbolic meaning to it. Like before I was known as spiritpanther87. Spiritpanther for the fact that the my Cherokee animal spirit was said to be a mountain lion. And 87 which is the last two digits of my YOB minus one. Put together it means "One with the Spirit of the Panther since before they were born." I'm known by quite a few other names too. . more than I could count on both paws. A few examples include: Spiritmouse, Shadowmouse, Tzolkin, Tarak, Kibunzi, Demian, and Alex.

As far as name changing goes, what's the point? I mean, if one can't think a name they wanna be known by through before they use it somewhere, then they should seriously reconsider their choice to join at all. However, this is just my opinion.

hello tough replie here is a good response. did you not change your entire account just to change spiritpanther87 to Tzolkin because the name just no longer fit. are you saying you should reconsider joining this site because you were not sure of your name. your very Controversial please clear me up on why you dont follow your own advice.

sorry if this seems a bit strong i just was having an interesting debate with my bro and know am in argueing mode

Good point, though if you'd notice I -was- sure of my name at the time I joined. Also, at the time I hadn't joined NIMHmuck, from which this username comes. Furthermore, another factor in my changing of my name, is the fact Marcus drew a picture of Tzolkin, and I wanted to be identified with it. And lastly, I found someone had copied the Avatar I was currently using at the time, and frankly was annoyed. If my identity doesn't remain unique to me, it is my responsability to make it so, even if that means changing it..

GrizzlyCoon

12-04-2005 12:56:55

My user name is from a novel I've been writing and hope to have published someday.

It's the common species name of a population of raccoons in post-mass extinction Alaska in the 2090's that have adapted to become giganticized due to their top predator status in the Alaskan wastelands, where every larger carnivore is long extinct. The grizzly coon weighs up to 120 pounds and grows up to 3 1/2 feet long. Like smaller regular raccoons, they are highly intelligent and curious, and can be highly dangerous from their potential to attack and spread rabies. They are under threat due to illegal poaching and poorly calculated population estimates before hunting season licenses are issued.

Xavier

16-04-2005 19:03:31

Hmm not much to explain behind mine, I needed a name for my character on NIMH Muck, and I've always liked the name Xavier, plus it kind of fit the character well, so that's what I settled on. Since NIMH Muck and Thorn Valley are somewhat linked, I figured it only made sense to translate the name I used on NIMH Muck here. Guess it also boils down to being able to allow others to easily link the person behind the character on the muck, as wells as here. Not to mention I had a -very- nifty bit of work by MAL that i could use as a nice, custom NIMH related avatar.

Aside from that, the rest is history :)

RustedWolf Fox

18-04-2005 18:32:56

Rusted is off an album called "Rusted Icons" and wolf-fox is because I like both animals. So highly original, right?

hmm interesting post so far. i had no idea there were that many stories behind names chosen. the reason i even wanted to change my user name was because when i was little i used to say my last name was tannerson because my step dad was like a father to me. dont ask what happened to my real dad it is just too soon to discuise. i will only say that i never got a chance to know him.

Procyon

20-04-2005 11:43:15

Used a scientific dictionary for mine. Needed something to be known by for online gaming (any fans of the original 'Soldier of Fortune' out there?), and so just opened the book and picked something that sounded all right. After that I became quite attached to it so the name became my general alias for most things. Then I began to research what the name was linked to and found that Raccoons owed something to it, hence the avatar.

As to whether the name should be set in stone, doesn't really matter. I stick with that one because, well, it's my alias. If there's something that I wouldn't want to be associated with the good name of Procyon, then another name shall arise. Depends on what you want from an alias I suppose…

Cluny

20-04-2005 14:04:33

Hi!
Not much of a story behind my user name. Cluny is my favorite character from a book and later TV series called "Redwall." Cluny is also my second character on NIMH muck. I'm still working on my avater, though..... ?

Martin Siedow

30-04-2005 08:20:26

I use my first given name and my family name as user name. Because it is very unusual (even in my home town), I use it as an identifier on the various Websites for "The Secret of NIMH".
When it fits the setting, I use my first given name also in the name of a roleplaying character. (In a "Secret of NIMH" setting I will use it not, to prevent being confused with Martin Brisby)
User names should not be set in stone but should also be changed only for a good reason.

HolyArrow

27-05-2005 07:09:25

Domo!

My real first name is Seiya. As many people might know, Japanese people use characters like the Chinese (In Japan we call them Kanji). In kanji, Sei means "Holy (or "Saint)" and Ya means Arrow. Voila!

mythril

I think that it is a fine name to use on line, when I first saw it the "Lord of the Rings" came to mind at first glance. being a fan of the books and movie :D.

mythril

yay! i love the lord of the rings!

Tortillian

29-07-2005 12:52:45

I've always liked the surname/nickname "Tort" for starters. I raise rabbits as both a hobby and part-time money-making practice, and one very popular variety (variety=color) is called the tortoise-shell, or tort.

Somehow I latched onto the name "Tortillian" while writing a book that is still in the making. When I finally broke down and decided to write a Nimh fan-fic of my own, the only name I could rightly settle on for a main character was Tortillian. So, there you have it. I carry it with me everywhere. :)

Slew724

30-07-2005 21:00:28

Slew is the name of a mouse character I created. He's really connected with the Biker Mice from Mars fandom, as a cop who comes to Earth and continues to fight crime here.

The Big Bee

05-09-2005 11:29:55

My nick "The Big Bee" comes from my alias used on my band's website The Wanna-Bees". Each of us has an alias or nickname. I loathe hackers and the like who misuse personal information placed on the internet, so I just don't give it out...it's the WISE thing to do.

I, being the chief instigator/organizer of the Wanna-Bees needed a tag that reflected that, and so, I am "The BIG Bee".

Tenken

05-10-2005 10:58:19

Hola, hola hola hola a todos!
I already answer this to you in the introductions post but here I go again. :)
My name came from a manga (japanese comic) by the name of "Rurouni Kenshin". A character there was called "Tenken" 'cause his ability in kendo (again nothing in common with me but the name sounds good anyway  ). I'm not sure what means (maybe HolyArrow could lend me a paw or two on this  ) but I think that is coming from Ten (maximum, top) and Ken (sword, swordplay) but maybe I just bluffing.
HELP HIRO!!! :P
That's all, a tight hug to all! :)

Japanese name meanings totally depend on the characters. And if he is good at Kendo, you're guess "Maximum Sword" is what I think the meaning is.

Ten means "Sky" so I'd say it would mean Top in this case (Not really sure to be honest...)

Ken does mean sword.

But Depending on the character, meanings are different. My real name "Seiya" is Holy Arrow because of the character, but just writing "Seiya" in hiragana/katakana (The Japanese alphabet), or in the alphabet, it could also mean "Holy Night (Christmas Eve)" and alot of other meanings.

mavikfelna

20-10-2005 18:29:02

Well, it's been a hugely long time since I've been on the forums but I use the username Mavik Felna just about everywhere, and have since the earliest days of the web.

Mavik is a character I created for Steve Gallacci's Erma Felna, EDF setting and since he is me I figured that was a good nick to use on AOL oh so many years ago.

David Leemhuis

I personally have never seen any need to use anything but my real name, although anything’s possible…

shivermetimbers

14-08-2011 06:20:13

I've used this name on a few other websites. It came up during a conversation with my friends over the Somali pirates meeting with the Pirates of the Caribbean. I forget exactly how the conversation went about, but the name stayed.

Azathoth43

14-08-2011 22:49:24

Mine comes from H.P. Lovecraft, obviously. The 43 adds up to 7 which is my numerological number.

Hera Ledro

15-08-2011 01:13:36

Hera Ledro is a central character in my novel series, and before its reboot was -the- main character. He was also, many many moons ago before the phrase "Mary-Sue" meant anything to me, an author avatar; he was effectively me. I've since branched out and made different (and stronger) characters, and Hera Ledro is nothing like me anymore, but the name has stuck since I first started foruming nearly a decade ago.

I've had other usernames based on various fandoms - Throttle (BMFM), Danny (CDD), Robin Hood (from Disney's version), and other non-furry examples such as Agent Smith - but the one that I always end up returning to is this one.
