On July 2, 1982, an animated feature film based on the Newbery Award-winning novel by Robert C. O'Brien, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, hit theaters on this hot summer day. Two weeks after it's opening week, this animated film hit the silver screen nationwide. The film that we know and love today is now celebrating it's thirtieth anniversary. Let's take off our hats to Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, John Pomeroy and the rest of the entire team that helped create an animated masterpiece called The Secret of NIMH.

The film was released to much critical acclaim and was a moderate box success, grossing in $14,665,733. Even though it earned a little more than twice the budget, Gary Goldman expressed their disappointment in a 2000 Cinefantastique article:
"My biggest disappointment was when Secret of NIMH only made $13 million ... We had given two years of our lives, a hundred and ten hours a week. We were thrilled with the results ... Today, you could give me the biggest success in the world and I don't know if I'd feel it as much as I would have if we had gotten that success during The Secret of NIMH."

The 2012 Adjusted gross for The Secret of NIMH is now $39,507,700.

Right before our eyes, and beyond our wildest dreams, we have discovered The Secret of NIMH to what most consider to be one of the most beautifully animated films ever to be produced. Many were lucky to see the film as it appeared in theaters while others may just remember growing up with the film. As more people discover this jewel today, they rediscover the child in themselves of yesterday.

I remember watching this film for the very first time back in 2006 in my sixth grade class. I immediately fell in love with the film, but we never finished it in class, so I wanted to find out more about it online. I stumbled across many NIMH fan sites such as Thorn Valley and Maximum NIMH. Later, I became a member of Thorn Valley on April 10, 2006 after only watching the movie halfway through in my class. About a month later, I was able to borrow the movie from a friend and watch it from start to finish in my own time. Ever since I first saw this film, I have always shared a strong passion with it and I always will.

Happy 30th Anniversary NIMH! Here's to another thirty years!

Hey NIMHster,

As one passionate fan to another, I too enjoy this film a great deal. In fact as time goes on, I find myself wanting to watch this film more not less than before. You may or may not be familiar with the story of how I first came to know NIMH. I've posted the entire story before so I don't want to bore you with the details all over again. Needless to say this movie has got to be my all time favorite where animated films are concerned. This is not to say that others have not been worthy, but SON has somehow managed to make a connection with my emotions... A connection that I think will be everlasting. That is something you do not hear about many films today whether they be live-action or animated.

Peace :D

Hello,

I didn't actually celebrate the 30th Anniversary of "The Secret of NIMH" on July 2, because I was out of town, traveling and visiting with family members.

I am going to try to create a 30th Anniversary tribute photo, albeit a strange tribute photo!

I have been a Barbie fan for years, and one of my My Scene Chelsea dolls reminds me of Mrs. Brisby. Her name is Easter/ Esther Elizabeth, and she sports red hair, bangs, natural makeup, etc. She ISN'T I Love My Friends Chelsea, so she doesn't have rooted eyelashes (The one ILMF Chelsea who was in Big Lots! had icky-looking eyelashes, so I passed her by), but she looks rather country, rather prairie, and rather "Mrs. Brisby", anyway!

I'll more than likely try to pull a "Secret of NIMH" image off of the internet, and I'll photograph E.E. against the image, while she's wearing brown clothing and a red cape.

If I'm able to put together such a photo, and such an outfit, the end result will represent the insane dedication of a "NIMH"/ Barbie fan on a mission!

I'll try to post a photo of the aforementioned result, if I am able to put such a result together by the end of July!

For the record, My Scene Hangin' Out Chelsea looks like a blue-eyed, teenage human version of Teresa Brisby, what with her bangs hairstyle! If you'd like to check out pics of Cafe Chic Chelsea (Easter Elizabeth), I Love My Friends Chelsea, and Hangin' Out Chelsea, here they are:

(NOTE: I am NOT attempting to promote any eBay auctions; I do not even know magma_heritage, but I am trying to credit her for the photo, as it is a photo of her Chelsea doll).

I'm sorry about causing the window to become longer, but I had to credit that eBay salesperson, because eBay salespeople get really upset if they so much as sense that somebody might be trying to steal their photos!
