The bill in question is very vague, but it looks like the internet will be heavily censored if the bill does come to pass.

To quote wikipedia:

The bill expands the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. The bill would allow the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), as well as copyright holders, to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement.

Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the infringing website; barring search engines from linking to such sites and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites. The bill would make unauthorized streaming of copyprotected content a felony. The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.[4]

So basically, everything you enjoy about the internet will get screwed, to be put simply. Many jobs will be destroyed and if you were to stream something, like a video game, on the internet for a charity event, you would have committed a felony.

I honestly don't get it. The one's using your intellectual property are supporting and promoting it. Why support something that hurts you rather than help you? Yet corporations, such as Sony, are supporting this crap. Killing jobs and censoring the internet so that you can do more harm to yourself than good....just no...

I honestly don't know much about the bill than what I've told you, but it appears that any intellectual property owner can easily shut down any website for any copyright infraction.

Well, I think the ending of R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH will answer that question. ;)

Robin's could be screwed as well because fan-fiction is considered copyright infraction.

Yup, any sort of reviews, remixes, or commentary that uses copyrighted material can be targeted. I'll mention again that these things help PROMOTE intellectual property, so supporters are basically shooting themselves in the foot here.

I changed the title due to the fact that I dunno if Thorn Valley is culpable of any sort of copyright infraction. Robin's, however, is a concern.

Well, Thorn Valley is more than just a forum. (The Studio Art Section is totally susceptible to this) The members of the forum often mention Mrs. Brisby and other characters from NIMH, which are all copyrighted characters. There are stories being made in the Fanfiction board on this forum. (Like my War of Thorn Valley)

That, and removing Thorn Valley's mention from the title ruins the joke in my first post. ;)

Usually things that try to combat piracy end up not stopping piracy and instead end up harming the honest people......this being no exception.

I really, really hope this doesn't go through because it will signal the end of TGWTG / Channel Awesome. I really love the people on there and I know for a lot of them that's their job. I honestly spend more time watching their videos than watching TV.

Here's some good news

one of SOPA's big supporters The Business Software Alliance (Apple, Microsoft, and Intel Adobe) have backed off their support.

Also in one day 87,834 calls were made to U.S. Representatives

In total darkness shines a ray of hope. :) Now, if only we had such a hope from Lucas concerning the Theatrical versions of Star Wars.

I have a feeling that won't happen until one day Lucas either resigns his control over Lucas Arts or evaporates into the force.

Its like what Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park: "And before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now you're selling it!"
I can't believe anyone at Lucas Arts didn't question why they were using the original master prints for the "special" editions.
But that's another story :D

You looking forward to Phantom Menace in 3D?

....Back on topic, I wouldn't worry too much about the bill. It seems unlikely that it will be passed. Though just the idea of the government and corporations controlling and censoring the net scares the living hell out of me.

Nope. I meant the ORIGINAL Theatrical Editions, as in the editions originally shown theatrically in '77, '80, and '83. ;)

But enough hijacking this thread with Star Wars, the very idea of the government with that much power scares me, too.

SOPA is definitely a piece of legislation that I hope dies quickly, and Thorn Valley could definitely be affected by it. I hope that it gets voted down decisively, because otherwise there will be a lot of long court battles over it. I personally think that it has some chance of getting invalidated by the courts, but who knows how long that would take. And if it gets voted down narrowly, I guarantee that it's only a matter of time before similar legislation is introduced again.

I definitely encourage everyone to contact their legislators about this bill. I wish that there was broader industry support 'cause I guarantee you that it'll be abused far beyond just shutting down 'pirate' sites.

Update: This past week the House Judiciary Committee debated the SOPA bill. After amendments being shot down, members of the House admitting that "while we can't understand some of the techie stuff in this bill, we still support it" and basically going nowhere the Committee was adjourned.
A statement was sent out that voting on the bill will probably occur next year.
This has proven false as it came out early today that in fact another session this upcoming Wednesday, the 21st, another session will take place and voting will probably occur.
The worst thing about the voting taking place during this time of the year is that members of the House and Senate want to go home for the holidays so they try and get their voting done as early as possible.
If anyone here who lives in the U.S. contact your local representatives, send emails, sign petitions.

Thanks for sharing this information. It seems that the experts are against it, but congress isn't because the MPAA is lobbying them.
